I'm gauging interest to make the most accurate, in depth wiki for video game technical knowledge. Megadrive -> pictures -> history -> mods -> boardcans -> Schematics -> assembly code The ultimate resource could be made...
I’d really like to see the return of the wiki, I think there’s such a potential for compiling all the information spread across the forum, into something truly useful.
I have it archived, I think it's impossible to reuse with all the porn and other spam in it. You could recover the existing things you wrote however.
I checked it out, it's riddled with spam and forgotten passwords but it should be recoverable. I haven't slept in almost two days, while I'm sleeping see if anyone can find out if PMWIKI has a password override on articles using the wiki software or manual editing.
I have quite a numbers of scraps of technical information gleaned over the years. Few lists of capacitor values from different , pinouts not found elsewhere, etc.
Im very intrested into this. But some rules and/or restricted editing permisions would be better. I dunno what was in place back then.
If the wiki is only editable for a certain group of users, spam/pr0n shouldn't be a problem. I don't know what the current state of MediaWiki or PM Wiki bridge/integrations with vBulletin 4 is right now, would have to check, but there is a commercial ($70) wiki made specifically for vBulletin (compatible with vb4) with native/seamless integration for the user database (it shares the same users). You can check more here if you are interested: https://www.vaultwiki.org/ , just found it with a quick search, have not tried it out myself so dunno how good it is. EDIT: There's also a Lite version for free.
if we have to start the wiki over again ive noticed quite a few threads started by you ASSEMbler that are basically wiki pages just uneditable i think those threads would be the first place to start a total rebuild
I am very interested in helping with this, even with my extremely limited knowledge on certain subjects.
I'll help with this any way I can. I know how Wiki editing works and have worked on a few pages here and there. I'm not saying I'll be able to fix anything, but I can try, or will help with the new one.
A wiki for documenting this stuff would be awesome. Regarding the software, use mediawiki. I've setup 3 MediaWiki wiki's and love them. Tons of extensions, regular updates and simply the best usable wiki (and most other wiki software uses it as a base) Since it's backed by Wikipedia, support is excellent and the extensions that they use are always up to date. I would not recommend any wiki system that ties into other software such as vBulletin(updates can get screwy with this stuff and mod support is lacking. If you ever decide to change either wiki or forum software you will face some big problems with porting it over to new software), and definitely not hosted wiki software. It's best if you run it yourself.
Assembler, I created and handed over the wiki for altbinz, I have no problem hosting this wiki on my domain to allow myself and other people to clean it up and rescue the content. The database can then be handed back over to you so it can be hosted here. Let me know see here: http://www.altbinz.net/forum/closed-requests/website-request-wiki/5/
I normally use mediawiki (which is the one wikipedia uses/used). But I can host the old one as readonly to allow content to be copied over.
