Who said anything about having to wear glasses? There's nothing like that in the original article - which may well all be rumour mill bullshit anyway.

Theres a very good reason why VR never took off in the arcades, firstly the machines were obcenely expensive to buy & the hardware wasnt up to the task which is why they all had poor looking jerky 90's pc polygon visuals. The glasses argument dosent really wash as i wear glasses & have no problem with wearing another. I do it all the time when playing on my eyetreks or on my virtual boy.

I think technology has progressed far enough to do vr decently. Oh & Kron you hit it on the head perfectly.

Looks like to succeed nowdays you have to churn out cookie cutter games with gallons of blood & as many bouncy tits as possible.

As for the hype i see no problem, all 3 companies are doing it. To be honest sony is the worst offender, they are trying to turn them into some sort of fashion accessory (im looking at you PSP). Remember all the shit & hype about PS2 been super powerful, oh we have to be careful terrorists dont get them as they can use it to power missiles. When i saw the launch games i laughed my ass off it could barely produce a decent game let alone power a missile.

Ah i cant stand having anything else over my ears. Not the xbox live shitty comunicator (i play wearing a hat and use that to hold the headset) those stupid headphones that go over your ears in anyway (reason why i dnt listen to music while skating). Anyways i guess thats personal preference.

Also think about when you have your friends over? How much is it going to cost for second set of these special glasses, gyroscopic controlers and whats the power consumption on these things?

Also think about the build quality these things are going to need to have. Then add the cost factor and the cost cutting people like sony and MS are going to be implementing. Nintendo cant start to come out with these "great" ideas if they cant afford to make it as cheap as possible.

Quite. Innovation is a wonderful thing and surely preferable to generations of the same crap rehashed year in year out. But bottom line is that a business has to make money.

I'm not suggesting that Nintendo will be going a brigde too far on the innovation side, I'm sure they must know what they are doing and will have affordable and accessible games (for casual gamers and fanboys etc) and hardware for years to come, as well as catering for the innovation junkies etc. I just don't want to be reading in ten years time how Nintendo used to be the dog's knackers but pushed the boat too far, as I am reading about my beloved Sega all too often these days :(

Gaming isnt any more accepted now as it was years ago. Perfect example is when im talking to people at work & they ask me what i like to do in my free time & i tell them i like playing games and i just get the typical generic eye rolling and the usual reply of how i should get out more. Really amusing really as most of them just sit at home watching soaps.

The market now has been dumbed down for the masses i can go into any game shop near me & see a mass of bland generic liscensed games that all look the same & feel the same. Sometimes very rarely a fun quirky japanese game will get released but nobody will buy them as they dont want to be different so they get chucked in the bargain bin to make room for more copies of fifa or the next driving game.

I really don't want to turn this into a nintendo vs sony thread but the amount of negativity & the lack of open mindedness is shocking. Oh and yes i do own a playstation before you assume im just another rabid nintendo fanboy (^_^) there are many wonderous & quirky japanese ps games that i love but unfortunately im now the minority that appreciates a unique crafted game over some generic crap.

I'm sure Nintendo know what they're doing. Nearly everything they've made has been comfortably affordable. This is either all complete wank, or they've got some real ace up their sleeve.

And regardless of this, Nintendo are still making billions off everything else - I don't think they're gonna die any time soon. And there's still always their Hanafuda cards...

Thats so not true. Gaming is hugely more accepted then it was years ago. Just a simple plain look at the people who are willing to be attached to gaming brands will show you
how much more accepted it is. Look at how many people do have gaming consoles.

Watch the music channels on tv and look at how many are advertising to give away
consoles. Also look at the MTV and the next xbox tv show. Watch that and look at the
people who are willing to promote it. If gaming was still seen as it was many years ago
these people wouldnt be willing to be seen promoting it.

Is Elijah Wood really the target audience for the hardcore gamers...

To just who is Elijah Wood appealing to :smt082

I can't even see you PS2 or XBOX drones being in to him. The thing is that gaming is now part of the pop culture and that I don't like. I don't like gaming being pushed in my face by complete idiots who know sweet F.A. about what they are promoting. Oh yes, they may have a console and a hand full of games but do they actually know anything about them or the companies that made them? You could probably ask these people the following question " Which is the bigger company? Rock Star Games or Game Arts?" you just know they'll say "Rock Star Games because they make that fucking cool game where you can twat people over the head and steal their car. Who's the other one? Game who?"

Bring back the days when gaming was something you could enjoy without being told by the mass media what you should be playing.

Sigh, one of these days we'll find that happy median between coolness and innovation.

  14. Unless we see another 1983 style market crash (and THAT won't happen again since the overall market is many times larger than it was back then), this is never gonna happen. <Insert preoccupation Here> will be "ruined" eventually by "The Man" and this is inevitable. I guess I've just heard way too many fans of everything from games, musical acts, anime, computers, whatever the hell you want speak longlingly about "the good ol' days" to have any sympathy for it anymore. I do understand where you're coming from, but it seems to me that the only thing that can be done about it is to tune it out.

Speaking of the revolution, has anyone read the comments section of that BrokenSaints post? Some fella by the name of Aries has opened up a whole can of worms on the subject...

In my personal opinion, he is either telling the truth or has waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much free time.. I'm crossing my fingers its the former, but who knows...

Below is some of what was said (http://brokensaints.com/blog/?p=48#comments) :

It will also have gyroscopic controls, but like Brooke said, not all the games will use it. For instance, earlier I mentioned Nintendo has a Halo killer in development for the Revolution. This game will use the gyroscopic controls for aiming as wel as other things. Our game isn’t using this function.

The controller will also be pressure sensitive. The pressure you put into it will determine certain things, such as movement. This is another optional capibility. Someone on Nintendo’s board mentioned this months ago. They said that “touching is good, but feeling is better.†This may sound strange, but it provides great controls. Racing games will really be helped by this control setting.

The Nintendo Revolution will also include voice control more advanced than anything seen so far. Nintendogs is just the beginning. To achieve this, Nintendo sent us headsets (similar to ones you can use for Xbox Live) that are wirelessless communicating with the console. Imagine being able to merely call for an airstrike or reload your gun by giving out commands orally. So far, we have put this feature to the test the most; as you can see, I’m excited over this feature.

"From what I’ve heard, Capcom and Namco are sold on the Revolution and are currently playing around with the development kits. I don’t know whether they are actually making games for it though. I was suprised to hear that Square Soft has a game in development for the Revolution. It will be at E3 as well as some other next gen titles for the PS3."

"Microsoft is banking on stealing the show, but I think they will be upstaged by Nintendo as well as Sony. It’s going to be very funny to see them trying to get people excited about Perfect Dark 0 when both Nintendo and Sony will be showing off Halo killers."

"All three consoles are going to be very powerful, trust me. I’ll give you some information though: it will be more powerful than the Xbox 360. Much more powerful. Many gamers seem to think it will be as powerful as the GBA or something. That isn’t the case at all. From what I saw during my time their as well as our game, it will be very capible. "

"As I mentioned earlier, Square Enix (happy now?) is developing a new game for the Revolution. EA, Sega, Zoonami, Namco, and Activision are currently working on games.

EA is playing around with the Revolution’s capibilities, implementing them into another Madden game. This isn’t really news though. From what I’ve heard, they are really going out of their way to make this more than just a port. Voice controls are being used to the max in this title. Calling out audibles will be used this way. The wireless capibilities of the system are also going to be used. Like I said, there will be no reason to buy Madden for the Xbox 360 when the Revolution version comes out.

Sega is developing three games for the Revolution that should be at E3. I’m not going to reveal too much on what they are up to for obvious reasons. The three games I listed does not include the game we are developing for them. You will be very suprised at what they are doing. I’m sure you have heard of the Xbox 360 title Condemned that they are working on. This game is something that many wouldn’t expect Sega to make; you won’t expect what you will see at E3. The other game they have is a typical, quirky Sega game. It’s very interesting in the sense that it uses all the system’s capibilities.

Zoonami has already given out some hints on what they are working on. I have always felt that Sam Fisher is a much better character than Solid Snake. Zoonami just might have some characters that are better than both of them.

Namco is working on a Revolution game, but I don’t have details on it. I am sure that it is not a Soul Caliber III port. I don’t see why they just won’t add online play and Link and Ganon to the game and release it as a launch title. That would be a very smart move.

Activision is working on some ports for the Revolution. You will see what they have for the Xbox 360 at E3. At least one of these games will be ported to the Revolution for its launch."

"Like I said, I have seen seven Nintendo titles, some of which will be at E3. When the DS was launced, it had one sub par 1st party game. This will not be the case with the Revolution’s launch. If they were to release all the games I’ve seen at launch, it would easily be the best launch ever for a console.

I can confirm that Nintendo is working on a new, orignal Mario game. In my opinion, the last few Miyamoto games havn’t been that interesting. This will change with this game. Like Mario 64 for the N64, this game will introduce all of the capibilities of the console. It will use the pressure sensitive controls mainly, but the voice controls as well as gyroscopic controls will be used as well. From what I saw, this game will use mini games to introduce many of these schemes. All of these mini games could be released as stand alone games.

A new Super Smash Bros. Melee is in the works as well. This game will demonstrate the online functions of the Revolution. Nintendo has added many new things into the game, included a deeper combat system. Many more special moves are included as well as some very cool suprises. The levels will include some destructible environments, and the characters will be fully customizable. Want to play as Mario in his 80’s outfit? Or would you prefer the 90’s look? It’s your choice. The most innovative part of the game is the different modes. In previous games, you were allowed to play in giant mode, metal mode, small mode, etc. That has changed. You will be able to choose to play in a “Paper†mode (a la Paper Mario), a cel shaded mode (Wind Waker), or Viewtiful Joe-esque mode.

As I said earlier, Retro is working on a Halo killer. This game is going to be one of the best games at E3. In my opinion, StarCraft was the best RTS ever. This game is going to use some similar ideas. In most FPS, you play as a hero trying to save the day. In Retro’s game, they allow you to choose which storyline you want to play, just like StarCraft allows you to play as Terran, Zerg, etc. Biological weapons will play a major part in the game. Imagine fighting in a chemical plant, where toxics are stored everywhere. By shooting them, you emit the toxic. If you get hit by this stuff, many different things may happen. For instance, you may lose sight on the screen, your controls might be inverted or slowed down, etc. Or, if your character gets the fever, the controller might get hot. Very hot. The alien races are very interesting also. You will be able to switch to 3rd person in order to move faster (similar to running in Odd World: Stranger’s Wrath). You will be able to “impregnate†human players by grabbing on to them for a certain amount of time. This will implant a NPC in them, which will burst out at your command, instantly killing the human player. You will then be able to use voice control to command the NPC."

I call bullshit, he said PS3 will be easier to develop for than the next Xbox. That goes against everything else I've heard.

Hehe. Most of the people I work with know that I play games. They also know that I surf, go to the gym, and get out more than them (mainly b/c they all have kids) and put gay porn wallpaper on their computers if they fuck with me.
