I don't think the emulation will be a big selling point to the major gamers. Like someone on G4 said, "You can get all of that now and more for the price of an Xbox modchip".

I sold all of my NES and SNES games a long time ago... so being able to emulate the games legally without having to pay the crazy $ on ebay for the orginals is a very exciting feature for me!

How many Xbox's are modded, and how many were sold? I don't know the numbers exactly but I can't imagine it being over 10%. In other words, this is a pretty cool feature.

I think it's a really interesting move. Nintendo have always been massively against emulation, this u-turn (after the success of the NES classics series and OoT Zelda disc etc probably) is a good step forwards. I for one would like to turn on my console and think, hmm, tonight I feel like a bit of SMB3, lets get it. No modchip, no burning to disc, no hassle, so long as the price is right this'd be great.

We have yet to see the power (or lack thereof) of Revolution, I'd hold off from judging it until then.

With the emulation thing, I'm so getting one. I lost most of my Snes and NES games in some... incident, ten years ago. I love IMBNes on the PSX, and if there were some sort of "IMBSnes", I'd just wet my pants.

The Revolution is so far the most interesting of the three

You really think that Sega will disappear altogether? Even from the software business?

New Sonic games still sell, the new Phantasy Star game will sell, Shenmue will sell if they ever make the thing, and I'm sure there will be a new Virtua Fighter.

I hold out no hope for a return to hardware for them, but that's fine with me. I like the current hardware manufacturers just fine.

Sega won't go. They basically own the arcade world.

Yeah, one is called NEW Super Mario World or something but I think it'S 2.5D from the screen I saw. Mario was massivce and looks as if he was 3D.

You know, I wasn't very interested in the idea of paying for legal roms until this post. Some how I have it pictured that Nintendo is going to be charging somthing insane like $5-10 per rom, whic automaticly makes me dislike the idea. But If they go for a monthly subscription fee where you can get all the games you want, or for a few cents each, im all for it.

The biggest question beyond the pricing though is how they plan on letting the consumer store these games they purchase. Will they be loaded into ram, and then be lost after the system is turned off until the next time you dl them? Will they dl into a memory card (whic would probably not be able to hold many games at all)? Or maybe the system will be able to burn dvds as well in a custom format for massive ammounts of storage? If its the later, and they do go with an affordable way for the consumer to purchase these games, I won't even care if the Revolution has any good or original games, as it'll be the best way to play retro games (legaly) ever! :)

    Edit:

Yep, all characters and enemies in the game are 3D, while as everything else is 2D.

I doubt it'd be RAM-based, as people wouldn't be willing to re-download all of Zelda OoT every time they want to play the game. My guess is they'll encrypt the ROMs to hell and back with a unique identifier from the console itself as a key, and stick them on the 512Mb internal flash/whatever external flash you want. That way you can't copy ROMs from the net onto external flash, even if they've come from somone else's Revolution, since it's locked down to yours.

If they charge $5 for a ROM I'll be disappointed. It'd probably end up being £5 here...

Another point not yet brought up is who else will be going in with Nintendo on this? There is no way they'll be able to offer the complete back catalogue for these systems since the legal logistics would be a nightmare. While Nintendo makes great games I can see this getting old if it's only their games being offered.

I imagine they'll try and have some third party games available for download. I think most people would be happy if they got say...Konami, Capcom and Square. Those on top of everything nintendo Made would make for a pretty good collection (on the NES and SNES at least).
