I installed the japanese F-Labo RGB kit from here: http://homepage3.nifty.com/F-LABO/ProductsList.html . I used a CXA2075 instead of the 1645 it comes with. These are screens comparing it's video quality:

Jailbars are from running a Powerpak = increased power draw
RGB color pallet makes Fiery Mario's overalls yellow :highly_amused:
All shot on the same CRT TV with a 5mp camera phone

Pic 1: Stock AV famicom RP2C02H ppu Composite Video
    Pic 2: F-Labo RP2C03B ppu Composite Video
    Pic 3: F-Labo RP2C03B ppu S-video
Pic 4: F-Labo RP2C03B ppu RGB to Component (BA6592F based converter)

Nice. I didn't know they made kits for that; I thought the only way to do it was with a PlayChoice-10 chip.

sorry what? Is there a way to get RGB out of the NES without a playchoice PPU? o_O!!

I'm looking for the PPU chip for almost a year. An alternative would be AWESOME!

EDIT: Oh, I know that site. When I asked a friend to contact them they said they don't sell a RGB converter kit you need to give them your RGB PPU.

If this is wrong, please correct me, and if someone speaking japanese can do the contact I can pay for the translation, time and effort for getting.

    /me Looks at Yakumo O:)

The picture looks great - except its the wrong colour. Which kinda kills it for me.

? is missing from the box
    Box is the wrong colour
    Mario is the wrong colour.

No thanks, especially at the price the playchoice 10 ppu costs.

Some games look all kinds of fucked up with the Playchoice 10 pallet.

    Example - Totally Rad

I think the ? is missing from the last pictures because the player already hit the box...
But yeah, it does look strange because of the wrong colors...

edit: had no idea that the playchoise ppu had palette differences...

Thing is, this is a pretty normal looking. As mentioned above, some games look very weird. Some effects are missing due to tricks the programmers used. etc

Keropi is right, I already hit the "?" box in the RGB pics. I agree the the off colors is a little funny, in fact I chose to take pics of fire mario because it looked really weird the first time I saw it. I knew of the color pallet differences going into this mod, but after playing though a few games with it and then putting the stock ppu back in, there was really no going back. For me personally, the razor sharp graphics and vibrant colors beats the dot crawl and shimmering graphics of the stock system.

I'm not a hardcore purist by any means, so the off colors don't bother me as much as others. It was just a fun project to do and I wouldn't have done if didn't come across a dirt cheap "broken" pc10 board with the PPU intact (yea the prices are ridiculous on ebay)

As I said - the picture quality really does look amazing. I wonder if it's possible to edit the roms (if playing off a flash cart) to fix most of the games colour issues? Or at least not so bad.

Out of interest, what did you manage to get the ppu for?

I don't see why you couldn't edit the pallet to fix that bit.

This really amazes me. The NES has a million clones, not even a single ONE has RGB output?! O.O

Besides that I can't believe the PlayChoice10 PPU is so complex that it's impossible to manufacture an IC that would do the same.

^ thing is who will bother to clone the PPU and at what cost? Sure one can invest time+money on the project and when it comes to paying - for example - 50~60eur for a clone chip (because I can hardly see a big market for it) how many people will complain it's too expensive and name it a rip-off?
I have seen this many times in amiga hardware, one decides to research/produce and sell an expansion to the system and there is a gazillion people complaining about pricing...

    Either way, people buy it.

I have no idea what happened to the world but in the past 5 years I never witnessed an ebay auction like that million euros.
It seems in some part of the world it's money that comes from the drain.

Playchoice motherboards are becoming rare as we speak just to do that RGB mod.
If I could find the PPU for 50 euros, I would buy it for sure.

The sharpness is a plus, but the fact that Fire Mario is yellow when he should be white proves that this mod is a bit of a bust. You'd need to go through and palette-fix all the games to actually make things right which is a whole lot of effort.

Someone could make a whole lot of money by skimming a PPU chip from a Famicom Titler (which is RGB, but with the correct colours) and duplicating the chip identically, rather than relying on a dwindling population of PlayChoice chips which give you the wrong colours for your games. Okay, so we lose one rare console/home video maker - but it'll save a lot of arcade boards from destruction.
