Ripping Subtitles from a DVD and adding them to a BluRay?

I'm wondering if it's possible to rip the subtitles from a DVD then burn them back on to a BluRay version of the same film? The reason is that I own both the Bubblegum Crisis box sets on DVD and BluRay. While the DVD version is jam packed with extras the video quality is awful. Looks like some bad composite video job. The BluRay looks amazing but is Japanese only with no subs. I can understand Japanese but this show uses some "odd" words you don't hear in daily life or actually anywhere. So sometimes I'm lost to what the hell they are talking about.

So, I'd like to take the subs from my DVD then rip the BluRay discs and rebuild them with the DVD subs. Is this possible? If it is what software would be best to use?

No idea, but I would guess that the subtitling formats are totally different. Someone dorkier than me can comment for sure. The other idea is to find the BR rip of it (provided w/ subtitles) and re-author it.... or at least use the subtitling file as a guide.

 

I guess, the problem would be to synchronize the subs from DVD with the BR, since I would assume that they do not start or lapse the exact same way. But I could be wrong.
Anyhow, if there are just few secs of a difference between the two media, or if there is slightly different content which influences the length, you would have to re-sync everything, which can be an arduous path.

 

You can do this with an mkv copy of the movie, but I have no idea how to do this with a physical copy. I assume it would involve ripping the DVD subs and converting them to whatever format Bluray uses.

I actually did something like this a while back. I have the entire Maison Ikkoku series ripped from BluRay (Amazing quality for a mid to late 80's anime) on my laptop's harddrive in 720p (4:3 format). That show is actually very easy to understand, in fact no thinking is involved at all. Still, I do have the DVD subtitle files for every show. They do run at a different speed but by using an amazing Korean Media Player (KMP for short) I can re-sync the subtitles with the BluRay MKV ripped files. The end result is perfectly subtitled shows but you are stuck to watching them with the KMP. This is why I'd like to recompile everything to Bluray.

Hey, just had a thought. Rip my BluRay of Bubblegum Crisis or find a download then look for the subtitle files online. Use this Korean Media Player to sync them up. Play back the synced files on my laptop connected to my desktop's capture card via HDMI and record the video. Drawbacks are the subtitles are hard encoded then plus it's a lot of pissing about

If you're gonna rip the blurays, you'd be better off embedding the subs into an mkv with mkvmerge.

Also, Maison Ikkoku was released on Bluray? TO THE INTERNETS!

I love this show. I've seen it from start to finish 3 times and currently on my 4th time in lovely HD. I'm still not tired of it.

When was it released on BR? I just watched the whole damn thing in 480p... took me about 6 months, doing an episode here and there. MIght have to do the better quality one now.

I watched it unsubtitled. I find colloquial subtitles throw me off more than anything, so I just turned them off. Also seen every episode way too many times. It was a nice trip through time... took me back to the 90's in Texas when I first started watching it, then to the 80's of Japan.

 

Oh yeah, those BluRays aren't out until Christmas. Where did my rips come from I wonder?
I first saw it in 1994 I think on fan subbed VHS tapes. The quality was ok but I only ever got to episode 74 because the guy doing the subs (finished with cathedral animation) stopped doing them. It wasn't until 2004 (i think) did I finally see the last 20 odd shows and all the specials and movie.

I'm with you on the subtitles. For something like Masion Ikkoku the subs are not needed. They just put you off what they are actually saying many a time. Bubblegum Crisis on the other hand needs them or at least for me.

Indeed. For an animated series it's very strange to think about having feelings for the characters but the story is told in such a way that you can't help it. IMO, Maison Ikkoku was here best work yet doesn't seem to be the most popular. That would be Urusei Yatsura I'm guessing.

I saw the original Arctic Animation versions, on like 6th generation EP VHS recording. So awful... their subtitling quality was not up to snuff ever... and this is probably their early work. (Oh, the 90's... how I miss it). There was a local guy to me that had TONS of LDs. And I spent my hard earned money (well, most of it from an insurance settlement when our house was broken in to) on an Amiga 1200 and got to work. 2 years later, I had retimed and edited all 96 episodes. You basically have to watch each one 3-4 times to complete it. Needless to say, I was burned out, and moving to Japan soon anyway, so I sold all my gear.

I asked the LD owner if he still had our old Amiga scripts, as I lost touch w/ the guy that bought my machine. Would love to have them, for nothing else than to see the fruits of 2 years of devotion. Searched around the intarwebs... there was apparently an end all be all of timed scripts website that went down a year or so ago. So sad. I also went digging through VHS tapes in the closet last trip home... no love. Oh, well.

BGC I'm not too bad on. The only thing that I'm totally lost on is Ghost in the Shell. I watched Patlabor 2 in the theater a few months ago. I got a bit lost about halfway through, but then it kind of came together.

Good old Ranma. The first Ranma shows I saw were in Chinese! Then came the horrid US dubbed versions and finally I could watch the original Japanese versions. Back in the UK I own all the Urusei Yatsura movies and a few Ranma original VHS tapes!. Another Rumiko one I liked were the Mermaid series (Forest and Scar in English). I rented them from GEO a few years back on DVD. I actually own the Mermaid Scar OST.

@GaijinPunch - Oh man, I remember Artic Animation. I had loads of stuff by them including the early Maison Ikkoku episodes. What did you guys call yourselves? When I go back to the UK I really need to go through all my old VHS tapes. I wouldn't be surprised if I had stuff subtitled by you.

 

Nt-Anime was the group I was in. Those guys now have a non-profit group and do a con once a year. They do not run A-kon though (AFAIK) which is also in Dallas, where I am from.

Ranma was good, but went out into left field. I might give it a go though... brainless fun I can watch while the booze take effect.

As others have said, you can rip the BD into a (preferrably hi-10, but many players do not support it yet) MKV and you can merge the subtitles in (if the timing doesn't have any issues).

You can probably play the finished mkv file (8bit one) remuxed to an .MT2S on a PS3 (As long as the video codec within the file is one that the PS3 can play)

There is also the alternative of downloading a torrent of the BD with the subs pre-merged/timed into an MKV file.

If you need to redo the subs any subtitle workshop program will help with adding delays (due to adding or removing logos at the start) or retiming (due to framerate changes). I use DSRT for that.

 

I wish someone would do this with Memories. I love that movie, but there's no western Blu-ray release. It would be great if someone took the subtitles from the American version and added them to the Blu-ray. Or better yet, if they'd just release the Blu-ray in America.

 

Thanks for the links, rewak. I'm actually now downloading a BluRay rip of BGC (I don't feel bad either since i own both the DVD and BluRay boxsets and bloody VHS tapes) but I have no idea if it's subbed. If not I'll be sure to try out your advice.

 

What's entailed in re-authoring a BluRay disc? I have a burner her but literally never use it. I haven't booted my PC in years either... I'd need Mac or Linux software. Haha.
