I've been looking through some old posts regarding RPG making, and I was gung ho about getting the PS2 Rpg maker 3, but now I think I have seen the RPG maker that best fits me: RPG maker 2003 I have never been into the RPG making 'scene', but am starting to. Lets put all our projects, techniques, and preferred makers all into one thread. Here is my idea for a Project: As some of you know, I have dreams to make an RPG one day. I draw up new enemies and villains every now and then, write scenes and plot twists, and write profiles for the major characters. I have about 4 or 5 books planned to show one story that will span about 10+ years. My drawings can be viewed at my photobucket account. I have no intention of making this for financial gain, but for making an awesome RPG, that hopefully will be remembered. I was wondering what battle system I should use in my game until I saw this pic and was instantly sold. Now the hard part will be turning my creations into battle sprites and other types for that matter, but I'll manage and throw a few Generic monsters from their selection, too. BTW, as far as RPG maker for the PSone goes, I also think that it lacks in a lot of fields, and is in dire need of a mouse and keyboard than a damn controller! Even if it is easier to use, having no keyboard or mouse makes making the game, slooooooow. If you could add your own music and backgrounds and stuff, it would be a lot better, but theres only so much you can do with a console RPG maker.
2k3 or XP are definitely the way to go. You can make your own stuff on the PC, and that's a lot better than working with a limited library. What makes you suffer from that is that it's still tilebased. Meaning you can't simply have a hand-drawn background that would look slick (you could even render it in Lightwave and take a picture from any angle, a-la FF7. Sweet!)... But no! No, sir, you have to deal with horrible little X by X squares that make you feel like building LOTR out of legos. But if you can make your own cool tilesets, you'll be set, after a while of suffering. Also, you're pretty much screwed if you want to make something Sci-Fi out of the box. Back to making little tiles.
And it all comes down to if you want to pirate it :\ Im a big person against RPG Maker 2k3 and all that now, simply because official releases in english have been canned do to piracy. Oh, and be prepared to spend some long hours. I had an rpg 3 or 4 hours long, and it took me a crazy long time to get that done. Lost it in a computer crash though >< i may have pieces of it on a demo cd i handed out, but other then that. nothing.
I really wouldn't use a game maker package myself. They always seem to have some shortcomming which force you to write your stories in ways you don't really want them to go. RPGs are something I've always wanted to write but never had the opportunity. I've been inspired recently though by playing the Dungeon Seige II demo, and have been playing around with some code. Maybe one day I'll get the motivation to finish one of my side projects, but I've got very little spare time at the moment. Maybe my new PC will give me a bit of inspiration though The question is though I suppose, what format would people most want to play RPGs on? 360, PC or PS3?
This maker fits the look and feel that my game is going to have. I already downloaded it and made a sort of retarded (so much so that its hilarious) demo. I know the only way to get it was to download the translated pirated version, but if they never release it legitamately, I have no other choice, really, for the maker of the RPG of my dreams. I have had the idea of this RPG for YEARS, probably close to 11. It started when I was eight, and when I was about 12-13 I had a good foundation and beginning set down and written. I want to tell my tale. I did think of making it a novel, but a game would be much more "Real" and "Immersive". But anyhoo, Im going to make new tilesets, sprites, and Import music. I'd like to have voices, too, and from what I did yesterday, I think It might be possible. I was just goofing around yesterday on my project and getting the look and feel of the maker and experimenting. I did a test battle, and I set the battle music to Michael Bolton's "How can I live without you" , and if you get a game over, the Phantom of the opera 2004's 'Past the point of no return" plays (Which I might add, actually works awesome and the if you pay attention to the lyrics of the first verses, it kind of explains how you might feel if you get a game over.) I also Imported a Lunar SSSC BG in the battle backgrounds and it worked great. BTW, does anyone know the name of the PSX emulator that can make your computer read the PSX cds? I have some things from some PSX games that I want to Import and edit and stuff.
^_^ Ok, I got EPSXE set up and its working. I tested Lunar SSSC on it and all works except voices, but I dont care about that. I think Im just going to set the game to a window and print screen. Does anyone know what Playstation emulator will let you rip things from the cd? EDIT: Nevermind, I found a nifty recording feature on the plugin. Once my Lunar Magic Emperor Battle sprite is done, I'll put it up, here, and this will be the only site that will have it, other than my photobucket account! ^_^ Too bad I cant find game saves at the moment, though.
