I'd say after 20 years those proprietary technologies tend to forgotten.
Of coz if there's someone with billions of dollars to waste and don't think for a sec to drop the cash to re-create the technology... Know anyone might fit the bill? :p

I don't think it'd be in the realm of billions. Millions or less.

Years ago i heard a legend about some software protection company, that offered a prize for copying their copy-protected CDs, and a hacker who won this prize using a homemade optical system and a homemade wooden disc a with a thin metal coating (that was before CDRs) without any software whatsoever. So re-creating existing technology is not always the easiest way around.

I'd like to see a homemade working Saturn System Disc. It would be an interesting oddity for sure. Never heard of anything like a homemade CD before.

I knew a guy in Atlanta that did console piracy and had a whole operation going on (he asked me to solder PS1 mod chips for him at one point). He had a setup with the Saturn as you describe- you popped part of a CDR into another ring that had the protection on it. It reminded me of the adapters to play 45rpm records on 33rpm LP players. It worked... He sold them to people (I know, bad...)

there are guides for doing it. Basically you need to butcher a legit disc for this.
