Hmm, I had like the opposite idea, most Americans seem to be a lot more 'warm' and open to "strangers" than people in Holland.

buy a metalic gun toy, paint it and mod it to make it look close to real ones. you can't kill or harm anyone with this, and it's 100 per 100 legal, but believe me, and apperances and confiance are the best weapon you can ever own, because they bring fear. if you're sure of yourself and bring the element of surprise, people won't start looking at the gun checking if it's a fake or not, everything wil happen so fast and all. Tom cruise can't really kick people arse like he do in his films, but he sure looks like he can. Don't even think what if they doubt it's real. if you believe it they'll believe it, that's how it works.

Anyway, i wouldn't do this myself, but that's an idea like an other one. Martial Arts is a good
idea too. Martial arts isn't only about kicking people arse and all, it's about confiance and control in yourself.

Dude, avoiding fights is all about presence. If you see a group of tough guys and they're looking at you, walk down a different street. If a group of punks are following you, calmly walk to a public place, but show no fear. People in large groups are like swarms of bees, the minute you let on that you're afraid in the slightest they pounce on you.

Like one time when I was 17 a group of four guys started shit with me and my friend. We were cornered, no way to escape. It was a bunch of assholes, scoping us out, trying to act tough. So I looked right at the biggest guy, the one who the others look at, becasue if you can scare that guy off the other ones will chicken out too. When they came up I ignored the other three and concentrated on him. And sure enough when he walked away the rest of them did too.

 

And why i started training JKD was not because of learning how to fight, but how not to fight.

Because for me , i always see physical violence the last thing, i will ever do.

 

Good god man....today I was walking down the empty hallway at school (summer school sucks) and the 40 something janiter lady walked by dragging a cart and looked at me and called me a "stupid ass brat". I had no response, I didn't even do anything to warrant that remark, since im pretty sure being a school janitor is the biggest insult, but god damn! Sometime's it's adults who are the rudest!

LOL, once a kid at lunch tried to get in a fight with the janitor. He said the janitor talked about his mom. LOL, the whole cafeteria was laughing at the scene!

 

I'd avoid fights if at all possible, but if I had any training in anything, I would probably try to do as much bodily harm as possible to someone who assaulted me, short of permanently crippling them. I think it's usually what they deserve, anyway.

 

Taemos: i am big as fuck, and i can seriously hurt people if i wanted too, but i have experienced too much, in my life to do that, if it is not has something to do with my family(or people i care about, and some others) then i would be there in a flash and defend them. And still i see it as an ultimate last resort to do.

Well i exprienced some serious shit at my canoo trip in Sweden, my former friend began to punch at me with his canoo roeing stick thing. (we were in the water) and if he had ever stood up in the canoo, i would have been forced to defend myself more than i did, and would have been forced to smack the shit out of him, and get him into the water.

But luckily we did not get that far.

And we took home the same day (thank god for that).

So that is why my canoo trip was shite bigtime.

 

So once these two rich old assholes went ballistic on a friend and I (he lives near a golf course - long story) who were on the course to recover a lost frisbee. They shot golf balls at us, then they yelled at us, and the moment they started demanding a response and we responded, they said we were insulting them. Yeah, technically we were trespassing, but these people just go insane with authoritative feelings...

New-Rich (nouveau riche) mexicans tend to be MAJOR assholes.

But mexican cops... now THAT's scary agression upon you. They open your bags or briefcase and throw the things on the street just to see you pick it up. They shove you on the patrol car's cover, they insult you and push you.
And if you even remotely mention the mexican constitution or human rights... well, you get beaten up, raped, then jailed for "posession of narcotics" or "disrespect to authority", of course, robbed and tortured, and sometimes killed.

Then there's rich students in private universities. This has yet to happen to me (as I've only taught in smaller schools - until this august), but one of my brother's colleagues was almost assaulted by one of this kids, yelling at him "I pay your fucking salary, you CANNOT flunk me!"

To which my brother's friend simply said "here's 50 pesos - your salary to me for today's class. Now get THE FUCK out of my classroom and NEVER COME BACK!"

Which did the trick - and I expect to apply it should it ever happen to me.

So, in short, yeah, people are broken.

 

Around here you have to look out for white trash when you go to bars and stuff. There seems to be a very scary growth in the whole organized racisim thing too (skinheads, etc.)

Suprisingly, the closer you get to the city of Los Angeles, the less people tend to fuck with you for no reason. Mine is a city where it seems violence can break out at any moment but suprisingly it rarely does. I feel safer walking around at night in Hollywood or Santa Monica than say, Ventura (north of Los Angeles. I live about inbetween the two near the San Fernando valley.) Where I live though it's pretty safe, you have to worry about bored cops and groups of kids more than say, gangs or anything.

 

a skinhead by himself is nothing to be concerned about...its when they multiply they become bold. living in los angeles i had a couple scary encounters with korean gangs...these guys are nuts. but it was rich kids from the suburbs were the ones that made me constantly look over my shoulders.

if youre walking around downtown late at night in any city you automaticly become a target but you also become one of those threatening scary guys you might be afraid of if it wasnt you. ill be walking down the street in my own city late at night and the most scary looking people will cross to the otherside of the street just to avoid me.

 

I think most of it depends on confident you are. My friend (who was a serious coke addict, so this probably lost all credibility right there ) once told me I was "intimidating". It didn't sound right to me, since I'm about 6" 1, but only about 135 pounds (Europeans who don't feel like converting: it means I'm fucking skinny ). He said it was really my "goth pants" that freaked him out, though.

That guy was pretty crazy...

I'm not intimidating at all - since, after all, I'm just 172 centimetres tall (that's 5'7 in feet). Hell, I've had girlfriends taller than me.
I'm even less intimidating because I'm a pretty easygoing fellow and I treat everyone with kindness, and even more so because I like to talk things rather than go into violence.

But many people have told me that once I'm angry, I'm scary as hell - not because I yell or anything, but because I look REALLY insane. Mad, in the most calm-before-the-storm way.

I hope this helps when I start teaching in the big university this august - since most of my students, even being 17 to 19 years old, will most likely be taller and larger than me, even if they're much younger.
