If that's the case then prepare for 720p blurryness and tons of lag, or at least that was my experience with Onlive Source
Indeed. I don't fancy streaming 45GB every time I want to play a PS3 game let alone how much data PS4 media might contain.
You would be streaming video, not actual game content. But regardless, while I expect some streaming functionality, it won't be the only way to play a game on the console. The bandwidth isn't there.
I refuse to support Streaming gaming services. (They say it will allow "Graphically rich games" they are full of SHIT. All of the low resolution video encoding and shitty compression completely negates it. In a recent test by Eurogamer even a 20Mbs Connection doesn't provide decent picture. Plus the bandwidth requirements on both ends are flat out insane. Not to mention people like me who have a 100GB cap each month for UP/Down combined would be fucked in the ass very quickly. Even more so for people in places that have worse caps like all over NA and in places like Austrailia) Even if for Backwards compatibility. If the PS4 has the power it deserves, there is NO reason why it shouldnt' be BC with both PS1&PS2 games AT LEAST straight out of the box.
There ARE reasons, rememeber it's Sony we're talking about? The same company that removed the parallel and serial ports in the PSOne, the HDD support in the PSTwo, and the PS2 backwards compatibility in the PS3... The main reasons why they wouldn't provide PS1 and PS2 (and PS3?) BC are: -possible piracy concern (not sure how, but Sony is always paranoid that BC will bring easier piracy) -Classics in the PSN Store (they want to sell these old-gen games and get profit, so they rather do it via PSN only, and not give you the chance to get the discs from a 3rd party and them not getting any money from it) I'm sure there are other reasons that don't come to my mind right away, but these 2 are enough for Sony... EDIT: of course the console itself may have the power to provide said BC, but it's all up to Sony...
I didn't say I support cloud gaming, it's terrible: console graphics are already getting too old, but onlive's are even worst, and after you get a decent GPU and see a game in real-full 1080p HD with 4xAA, 16AF (and in the case of GTAIV, mods) it's AMAZING If the nextgen will look like that, then awesome But keep in mind Sony just dropped support for onlive on their line of googleTVs They sure didnt buy gaikai for the hell of it...
Id imagine we'll be seeing stuff on portable consoles before anything else. Plus better support for remote play, if the video encodes better
It's a combination of locking down gameplay to Sony-branded TVs (to give them an edge in the marketplace) and killing off potential competitors to the PlayStation brand (by preventing too many TVs from having this functionality and killing the requirement to own a console). It isn't anything special, and I doubt that Sony will be moving to 100% cloud gaming as current cloud gaming systems (OnLive, Gaikai, etc.) cannot support the demand without prohibitive cost to the company.
Maybe it would be two types of systems? One, a powerful, yet expensive home media system, and the other, a low powered, streaming system for god-knows-what.
It's an interesting move by Sony. If the bandwidth was there, then they wouldn't even need to produce a PS4, just build a Playstation streaming client in any Sony TV and on the PS3. No massive capital investment to produce and sell a device at loss for years, it would be a much quicker path to profit for Sony who's not in top form these days. Plus the issue they have with 2nd hand games would be solved once and for all. I wouldn't like it and it's pure speculation but one's left to wonder...
