Oh well, they charged people lots of money to test their own stupidity http://www.mcvuk.com/news/39317/Sony-Weve-learnt-a-lot-from-PSPgo Sony: We’ve learnt a lot from PSPgo SCEE president says UMD-free handheld was a test of consumer behaviour Though it’s looking unlikely that E3 will be the venue Sony chooses to unveil its in-development successor to the PSP, the platform holder has admitted that pioneering digital-only handheld PSPgo was a test for its future plans in the handheld sector. Sony has never released sales numbers for the machine. When asked if it regards the PSPgo as a sales success, SCEE president and CEO Andrew House replied: “It was introduced in a mature lifecycle to learn more about what the consumer wanted and we’ve definitely learnt a lot. “Is that measured by success in sales? I don’t think it is. “One of the reasons we launched PSPgo was to understand where that consumer behaviour was going. We were getting signals from consumers that this was the kind of device that they wanted. But we need to recognise that consumers like their packaged media library.” A huge commercial failure, there's no way to deny. They thought they would jump on the ipod / iphone train but failed. PSPGo was a stupid idea from the start. That's what they learnt.
They really have to drop the price of it soon if they want to actually sell more. It had potential but like most Sony products they have an expensive price tag.
Smaller screen, priced almost like a PS3 and with just enough memory for 15-20 games, what did they expect? This simply shows that the transition from physical media to DoD takes a lot of effort and cutting corners will only make it a waste of money. Anyways, I wonder if this means they will stop production soon.
Last week they announced that who gets a PSPGo, will have 10 games for free. That sounds like they are desperate to clear their stocks. By the way, joystiq's take on the subject is more entertaining: http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/08/sony-psp-go-experiment-revealed-love-of-physical-media/
10 free games doesnt means anything, they can cut the residual costs of those sales by offering not-so-new games and 1st party titles in which case sony doesnt have to pay anything. Lost sales? dunno, if nobody bought those GOs, who was going to buy those games?
All I can say is "thank God it was a major flop" Now we can live ina bright future of games on phsical media or at least a better chance of it. I still wish that my XBLive versions if Afterburner Climax and Rocket Knight were on real media though.
Having to use their micro mem stick format and a complicated gui for the playstation store really hurt any chances of it succeeding. Not to mention no umd adapter and charging even way more. I think what execs forget is that ipod/iphone market is for games that are casual and for a quick play to keep you occupied for a couple of minutes. Not to mention the reason down loadable content works on consoles is cause it is an option and you have a decent amount of memory to work with. Not to mention the down loadable games are often games that are more practical as a digital download instead of a full blown retail game.
At $75 or less is still cheaper than a 16GB MSduo, screw the games! you can have every 16bit game in one portable console.
Same here. At least i managed to get WipeoutHD+Fury on Blu-ray disc. After Burner Climax had to be on PSN though... What companies must understand is that both distribution systems can coexist. For one to work doesn't necesseraly mean the other has to die / cease. Steam is a good example of this. Some people buy games through it, while others get the dvd disc on online/retail stores. Music cd's are still being sold, even though there's digital distribution. Same goes for movies / tv series. Now books / newspapers are having digital distribution through ipad / kindle... Even comics are being distributed digitally through PSN. They'll stop making the "paper" versions? Not a chance. The game companies must understand they don't have the right to impose us the way of distribution they think it's right.
that's been my bet for getting once since it was first announced. Maybe Sony should have hired me instead.
Haven't seen anyone post the list of the 10 games you get for free yet: http://techtickerblog.com/2010/06/01/it’s-official-buy-pspgo-and-get-10-games-free/ Not bad, except the Avatar game sucks, the World Cup game will be worthless after the World Cup is over, and how goddamn old are Wipeout Pure and Vice City Stories? Other than that, the rest of the selection is definitely good, but it does reek of PSP desperation in general, not just PSPgo desperation, considering they have to give some of the biggest games — GT and LBP — away for free...
Homebrew is possible on the PSPgo now? Interestingggg.... If the price drops to GBA Micro levels I might pick this up then, even though the D-pad still sucks ass.
They took a bullet for us. Maybe nobody else will try this crap again. Funny they decided to spend all that money to figure this out, they could have just asked politely.
"So you just bought our xxx$ piece of useless shit, thank you very much. We might inform you now that this was just a test to see how you like it and that we will cut any support within the next couple of weeks. Have a nice dahay!"
