I'm glad the GO hasn't been a success because i never really liked it. I like to have a choice of digital download or physical medium. Most of the PC games i own and buy are on cd's/dvd's but i also own several on steam because if there is a good deal on a game i'd like via steam then i don't mind buying digitally unless the disc version has extra's like guides...etc.
Sony has not yet revealed worldwide sales numbers. IIRC, there have been about 25000 units sold in both Australia and Japan in 2010. If you take the same for the US and triple (launch bonus) the total amount to include 2009, you are at roughly 220k - the Virtual Boy sold 770.000 units worldwide.
They need to close a bunch of quotes if they want more people to read the article than fell victim for the PSPGo.
I don't think they learned PSPGo was a stupid idea. I think they learned it is too early to rely wholy on downloadable games for a system. They were testing the market. The PSP GO failed, but sooner or later the format (download games) will be the only type of gaming available.
I don't see the download as the only format for games. If there's a market to explore, someone might explore it. Don't they sell music in LPs (vinyl) in Japan today?
Yeah they should've waited for PSP2 to rely solely on DoD, instead of doing it helfway through the PSP with a ton of games already on UMD format. Plus halfassing it didnt help... To 0.0001% of the market
Well, the real problem a lot of people over look is that internet penetration in residential areas is still not all that high. So, to have a console that completely relies on an internet connection is limiting a limited market: i.e. a person who doesn't have a grudge with Sony products, plays games, wants a portable gaming system, has internet, etc. etc. The PSPGo assumed a lot about users. As mentioned before, the best bet for... well, like at least 15 more years, is to have both digital and analog mediums. Also, bandwidth costs still need to come down to even consider download only games. (I read somewhere else that, say, a FF7 PSP-PSX downloaded a couple times (which as I understand it is allowed) could easily match the cost the game is sold for.) *rant rant*
+1 Imagine that day btw. It will suck ass totally. There will be almost no betas to collect, no physical demos, no nothing.. Assemblergames.com will be our only collecting oasis.
In what way, Do you mean your previously purchased software? If so, all that shit is tied to your PSN account not your PSP/PSP-Go. PSN lets you register up to 5 PS3 + 5PSP devices per an account and you can redownload the software as many times as you want. As well, you can at any time unregister a device from an account (after unregistered, the device will no longer be able to play any software it has). When PSP2 comes around, which it will, and when it has BC with PSP software, which it also will, You'll be able to redownload any psp software you purchased and play it on the psp2. DSi owners on the other hand are fucked when it comes to 3DS (as purchased content is locked to the device it self (same with Wii), and you can not transfer it to another system, only nintendo can and only do it by a case by case basis).
Oh I can't wait to see the 3DS, I have a feeling it's going to suck hard (but still sell in the billions)
