    Mysterious PlayStation

First of all, sorry if this is the wrong forum but I wasn't sure where to ask.

Okay I came across this PlayStation a while ago for £8 in a shop, and I was under the impression it was used in a Sony store or something. Until I found this thread HERE.

This thread led me to believe it may be an early model given to certain companies? The example in the thread is a SCPH-1000, but I suspected this was a SCPH-1002 (my immediate thought due to it having same outputs and a EU power board).

It boots backups just fine as long as they're burned at around 4x. Tested NTSC-U/C with a copy of Legend of Dragoon and I was playing for a good few hours. Beatmania which is NTSC-J worked fine too, it's even allowed me to swap to an append disc, Gottamix.

Sticker residue, same location as on the coloured debug PlayStation.

Lack of proper label and "NOT FOR SALE - Sony" sticker there perhaps hiding that it's a debug console?

I'd like it to be a DTL-H1001H, but I've no real idea.

High resolution PCB pictures HERE. As you can see there is no modchip, I'm unsure as to why the GPU is being grounded though.

Any light on the situation would be nice and much appreciated.

It's probably a demo unit that Sony used at trade shows, it's effectively a debug unit but in a retail case, probably rarer then a debug unit but not as desirable as it's not green or blue.

No it does not. It has the same outputs as a SCPH-1001 or 1002. Either way, this is very nice news for me.

This wouldn't have a model number then?

SCPH-1000, DTL-H1000 and DTL-H1001 (few consoles) have a S-Video out. I think that your console from 1995 year.

I figured it's got to be an early console because of the parts and layout.

S-Video has no use for me anyway, using RGB SCART via AV multi out.

DTL-H1000H is in the lists of Playstation hardware but I have never seen the sticker on it with the model. May be the model with postfix "H" was added by the joke. I am in search of a lot of units such as DTL-H1040 and DTL-H1050 that are in the documentation to DTL-H1000. Some things can be identified only by the text on the box and serial numbers.

Anyone know as to why the GPU has a peg lifted and ground to the motherboard?

Yeah.. I feel like an idiot for missing those images.... oops!

Core changes from what i can see appear to be:
Boot Rom 2.'E 7/17 (Does this unit boot into a pal or ntsc dash anyway?)
Sub CPU 2.'E 7/24 (I seem to remember that this is needed to be modified to bypass the SCEX restrictions, as seen on debug and yaroze...)
not sure if that's supposed to be an ' or a 1...

and the lifted wire on the GPU
Now I don't have a good pic to see which pin that's on, but the area puts it near pins TEST0-3 or PCKSL1-3

    interesting...
Could this be some sort of flag to output to pal/ntsc or similar, even though the bios is set to the opposite?

a better pic of that side of the chip might help identify that...

I did actually have one but my camera seems to have overwritten it, I'll take another picture of it. I believe it has a PAL dash.

Click me! GPU leg pictures here!

Thanks for the insight, appreciate it.

Wow! This is rare alright. My guess would be that this is a somewhat late Debugging Station. All Debugging Stations I have seen (as well as the Yaroze) have had the PU-8 PCBs, except for those very early with the s-video connector with PU-7 PCBs.

I have never seen a PU-9 PCB before.

I have never seen CXD8561Q either, only the CXD8561BQ and CXD8561CQ. All the older units I have seen had the CXD8514Q.

    Very cool!

Ditto that. Store kiosks are almost always retail units.

I have a few like that and they all came from early display kiosks from trade shows, not retail kiosks. Some have wires on them to reset the system after a set amount of time.

I think something like that would make sense.

I don't think it has that reset thing though, I've played Legend of Dragoon a good 5 hours before and it didn't reset.

The rest is externally controller, it just has a wire to the reset button inside.

I have maybe 7 grey early or pre-release systems that behave like
debuggers. They all feature the sony "not for resale"

You got super lucky my friend ! 8 pound?? If you pop it open
it probably has some weird stuff on it, sometimes a tiny sub-board on
top for the reset. Also some chips might be socketed.
