There was an article in the June (or July) issue of "Hardcore Gamer" magazine on Tose.
I must say, it was the first I've ever heard of them.

An interesting read. It does happen a lot, though, and in more than just the gaming industry.

How do you pronounce that, anyway? Toh-say? Toes? Toss?

I wonder how dot50cal will react upon the news that REmake and Zero , along with the rest of the ports, were handled by Tose o_O

If what they say is true, then they have created some of the best and worse games out there. Granted, I bet some of the companies had more involvement then others.

Re-read the article. It seems like they did handle the GCN ports of the RE games, although it doesn't say anything about REmake, and says that RE0 only worked on a little with them, not fully. It seems like they are some sort of company others go to for additional man power (Like how some cartoon frames were drawn overseas instead of in-house). Question is, do they handle coding (I'm guessing yes, since they do a bunch of ports), or do they also create additional art and 3D models?

Apparently they are responsible for the really bad ports of Final Fantasy 5 and 6 and Chrono Trigger with horrifying load times. Atleast that's what I've heard.

Eh, figured as much. Granted, knowing media sites, they tend to mix up pictures of similar looking games (Hey, Sony themselves screwed up several times with info and images). Now, that isn't to say that they didn't have any involvement.

    If it's a Japanese word, it's pronounced "toh-say".

For some reason 1up.com just will not load at all for me. Never has. Can someone cut and paste the article here for me?

Aha... interesting. I read an article about Tose on insertcredit.com a long time ago, and either on that site, or one it linked to, the writers interviewed some reps from Tose along the same lines as this one. Regarding keeping all developers' names anonymous, the rep said something like: All our staff (developers) support Tose's goal to remain anonymous, and so they're not in it for the fame anyway.

I always felt that was a little suspicious, a programmer or artist not wanting to get any credit for their work. Now this article above puts it more plainly: the workers at Tose are new to the industry and so they pretty much have no choice in the matter of being cogs in the Tose machine. It sounds like Atari in the pre-Activision years.

No, it would be closer to the word "TOSSER" but with the "R" missing. To say "TOH - SAY" the spelling would have to be Tosei

I've known about Tose for quite some time now but I had no idea they had worked on so many games!! The other company they mention in that feature, Nextech are responsible for MANY Sega console games and surprisingly 80% of them are shite ! The remaining 20% that are good weren't fully programmed by them. Normally Sega has their name on the game with "Computer design by Nextech" written underneath.

Very interesting. I had no idea about this company but it is a pretty smart business model when you think about it. Thanks for the help Pikkon and PhreQuencYViii .
