Upon looking at an old UK Computer & Video Games magazine from mid 1994 (issue 153) I noticed a couple of cool Sega accessories previewed that I don't remember seeing in the shops. Perhaps they never got made? The first is a cable made by Innovation that links a Game Gear to a Megadrive pad via the link up socket. This was to enable two players to use one Game Gear and one gane to play two player games. I assume this would only work on games written with this feature in mind and not existing two player Game Gear games. The second is a big box that you can slot up to six Megadrive games into and when connected up to the console you can select which game you want to play by pushing the corresponding button relating to the slot its in. Kind of like an in store NES demo unit. Wonder if these ever made it into production? I also came accross a pic of a prototype (artists impression?) Sega Nomad that was pretty cool and looked quite different to the final machine. I'll try and load up a pic if anyone is interested. Anyone know of other cool Sega accessories that didn't quite make it?
The cart-changer thing does exist, or at least something with same function. I'd like to see the prototype Nomad pics
I remember seeing an adapter that allowed Game Gear games to be played through the Genesis. Does that exist?
Nope. Unless the unit contained the main parts of a GG it can't work. You can't just make a GG - MD pin adaptor as the colours are off. The Z80 in the GG is different spec to the one in the Master System and Megadrive. I'm almost sure the cable to hook a controller up to a GG was released, but I'm unsure now. Have a search over on the SMSPower forums. I remember seeing an advert in a magazine years and years ago for these multi-game selector units. It had a big picture of the unit that sat on top of your NES and held 5 or 6 cartridges vertically. I have vague memories of a MD version too. I really wanted one at the time but Mum wasn't having any of it.
Actually if you fit a GG game on the Master system, it will very likely boot, show HORRIBLE graphics (the VDP is slightly different) and will have mono sound instead of stereo. Probably the sound will fail in some weird way, too. Same Z80, same amount of RAM, just a different videochip (to make use of the LCD screen), some stereo hacks on the sound generator chip and the start button Oh yeah you won't be able to start the game because Master System has no start *button*. <- edit Most likely the GG > MD adapter was just a lie. Tec Toy sold GG games converted to SMS in Brazil.
No it was similar to the 2600 adapter for the Colecovision where it's just a console in a shell. It fit on the side expansion port if i'm not mistaken.
The Mega Drive multi game adaptor was true for sure. It was posted in at least 2 British magazines back in the day. I always wanted one but never did see one in the shops. Yakumo
I coded both Master system and Game Gear and the only differences I could detect were: 1-Smaller Screen 2-Larger Palette What was different with the Z80? I developed used a GG to TV system rigged up by a friend. The
I'd love to get my Game Gear coverted so it plays on a TV like this; http://members.optusnet.com.au/eviltim/ggrgb/ggrgb.html If someone could do it for me, how much would it cost?
SMS and GG are equal besides screen and palette like Piglet mentioned. There is slight difference in some I/O things like controller stuff (start button is a button not something that causes NMI) if you boot a GG game on SMS or MD you'll get quite greenish tones on screen... load a GG ROM as SMS ROM, you'll see what I mean...
While on the topic of Game Gear accessories... Whenever I play an SMS game on my GG through either a Master Gear convertor or Nuby convertor the game plays but the brightness flickers quite a bit which is a bit headache inducing. This happens when using either of my Game Gears. I don't remember this flickering when I used to use my Master Gear back in 1991. Does anyone know what the problem could be?
I did have one cant seem to find it though it does not have the box. as for the mega drive i had a raceing wheel for car games cant seem to find one any where now days:crying:
It could be that both your Game Gears' internal capacitors are wearing out. Check out this topic for info: http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10939
