Parris, your restoration threads are simply awesome. I wonder how many assemblers/guest come here just to see your latest project? Im sure there is a pretty good "assembler Parris/Arcade restoration" breakaway site or at least a great blog oppertunity.
Yo whats up i just brought an astro city so i thought i would post some pics for you all. seeing these great machines restored looks like fun but i dont know much about them yet so i brought one in good nic the other day just one prob it does not fit through the door. i had to buy one of these when i saw one years ago for the first time in a game shop not far from where i live.
Like most of life's problems this one can be solved by my brother pulling it apart bit by bit so it will fit into my house. We agree this is great fun and not as hard as it looks This is assembler games uh but something is missing can you tell what it is yet
You can possibly pick up the missing PCB door if you contact Jeff at Digital System Designs in the UK. He doesn't have spares at the moment, but he is expecting 60 x Astro / New City Astro units very shortly and will no doubt have a couple of these units that needs to be broken up. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sega-Astro-Ci...27ac10072f&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ht_3184wt_941
I don't think it's really missing. I thought he was joking by posting a pic of his astro without monitor and ask: "what is missing?", so I was kidding too. In the first picture it seems to be there at least.
Ah silly me, I thought it was missing. A mate just bought one missing about 8 bits so I have been helping him find spares. OH:
Its all complete i have the door  i brought the astro of jeff from digital systems. the astro works well and the tv picture is great. only one real problame when removing the screws on the right side we had to force the two parts of the cab apart and the screws where in so tight we could not free them. this means i now have a small restoreing project to do maybe a new control panel would look nice for it .
Thank you, I have been using it elsewhere for some time and I decided to upgrade from that Boink avatar I've been using for.... years!
Jamtex, when you get the chance PM me your address and I shall send this panel. It's all wrapped and ready to weigh / establish P&P, It's yours for cost of shipping.
The screen is a Toshiba MS8-29FS. It has no chassis, but I am trying to locate one. It might not be worth all this hassle, frankly the tube could be rubbish, but it's worth having a look surely. At worst I'd just have a spare chassis. So, with that in mind I decided to clean the monitor off completely and have a better look. And post clean, just before I used the T-Cut on the screen And lo, there was some screen burn and the anti-static coating was all worn (you can see the two worst patches below) So out came a buffer, some t-cut glass polish (which is almost exactly identical to Novus 3 (having used both now)) and a Bosch polish pad. About 30 mins later So chassis next!
Located an MS9 chassis. Bought it, having it shipped this weekend, so I might start rebuilding the frame to ensure this unit works before I invest the time, effort and cash in spraying it.
Wow, that polish works wonders on monitors! Really loving this restoration, can't wait to see the final product!
Thanks again for the positive comments, it's interesting to hear people as enthusiastic as I am for a bit of restoration, although this one is currently going well without much effort. However, I am not going to be cocky - I bet the monitor is trashed! Tonight I'm filling some of the holes in the doors (someone must have previously attached a locking bar and damaged the metal). I'm using a product someone on AO recommended, called Milliput, which is an epoxy resin and sets like stone, but can be easily sanded and painted. First time I've used it and interested to see the result. http://www.milliput.com/home.htm Also, I am looking at different paints that might work on the Astro. I've tried a couple of paints and didn't like them, but this afternoon I discovered that Hammerite Smooth white METAL paint does a good job. I'll show images once done.
Damn Parris! Your work is amazing by making these arcades come back to life in fantastic condition! I have no doubt that everyone here at Assembler would like to live near by, just to help you.
