Nice topic, don't know why I didn't see this one earlier. Congratulations with your restoration-project. The result clearly speaks for itself. I'm to receive an AstroCity cab myself next week, can't wait ;-)
There was an astro city group buy over on the Neo boards that just went through not too long ago, I'd assume he got in on it too. Parris, this resto is pretty amazing man. If I didn't know any better I'd think it was NOS that just rolled off the line. Impressed and jealous, my hat is off to you man!
No. A friend of mine had given up his arcade collection, which included two AstroCity's, so the only thing I had to make sure at home, was my fiance wouldn't kill me for bringing such a beast indoor. Fortunately, she didn't care  (women *pff*)
Anyone in the UK looking for an Astro or a New Astro City should contact Digital Systems Design (Jeff) as he as a pile of them at the moment (about 15-20) and they are in reasonable condition. Certainly, having done one up they are easy to do. They are very robust pieces of hardware and clearly very forgiving. Thanks for the positive comments. I does look pretty decent I must say and even the wife likes it, which is my general rule of thumb these days. I'm going for a new monitor & chassis I think, but given that thus far I have spend about £150-200 less than the going rate for one of these units in average condition then I still have a few £ to play with. Just wanting to see it powered up and doing more than giving a warm, green glow.
I received the Robotron 666AMS8 Tri-Sync chassis on Friday, and decided to fit it yesterday. The chassis didn't fit the metal tube frame so I had to do a few modifications, however 3 hours later... I just have a few small jobs to do and it shall be complete. The Robotron chassis is fantastic and really gets the best picture of any of the replacement chassis' I have used thus far. It is available for £135.00 plus shipping from www.giz10p.co.uk Craig is one of the few people who will gladly modify the chassis to be compatible with the MS8 or MS9 tubes, so remember to explain what you are using it for. He does this free of charge! The monitor tube is absolutely perfect. No screen burn is visible during play and it's actually harder to spot on the tube once it's out of direct sunlight and indoors. I'm glad I didn't bother buying a new tube. It wouldn't have cost a huge amount extra, but it would have been an unnecessary additional expense. It also means that given the current prices for a tri sync NAC I have managed to refurbish and build this unit under budget!
It's pretty average and monotone, but an Aliens-fan is probably gonna like it. In any case I'd recommend the CPS2 Alien vs. Predator, that's how Konami's Aliens was supposed to be like in the first place! Get yourself an impression by emulating them on MAME, both games are emulated.
It's kind of telling that when I decided to first test the NAC and see whether it functioned, that I used Konami's Aliens PCB as the test (thereby suggesting guinea pig) board. It is kind of expendable lol However, it's excellent for testing 15kHz output as it is a very, very colorful game and you get a good idea whether you've set the colors correctly on the neck board ;-)
Yeah, i know AVP. Have it on MAME. I'm a big Aliens fan (The first two movies) and have yet to try the Aliens game.
Sadly, not for sale as the wife likes it - try jamma+ as I have seen Aliens appear on there several times.
CPS2 AvP is absolutely fantastic. I really would urge everyone to play the game as it really is that good, especially on 3 player with a big screen. I keep looking at those Astros on eBay. I really do want one...
Jeff is a good guy. I would recommend him if you are interested and not sure whether to jump or not. Currently I am considering purchasing a second unit... I love the NAC.
Parris if you ever manage to get yourself a lindbergh, DONT BUY THE ORIGINAL PSU i know you will want to buy it, but dont do it. I had tons of problems with the original PSU, problem is mainly that original psu is 240W and if you run the board with a nvidia 7800 gfx card you will end having trouble cause this card itself draws more than 240W. I was experiencing 10fps on some games, hdd blinking and crashing and so. I bought me a 600W atx psu and problems solved, but it was a nightmare to find the problem. My board came with a 6800gfx and i upgraded it with a 7800 bfg overclocking edition, i asume segas original 7800 has some custom bios that runs the card at low end mode or so.
Talking about Naomi UR's, just picked one up too! Still laying in bits and pieces in the back of car as it had to be taken apart to get it out of the sellers house. Any chance you know if there's a build-up tutorial somewhere? Or are you doing one? The seller provided me with some pictures, but I'm afraid it's not going to be enough.
