    Hey all,

I've had this sega cd in my garage for a few years. I bought it for parts and attempted the resistor fix, but being 14 at the time botched it pretty bad. I come here for help getting this thing operational again then overclocking the genesis and probably other improvements

As you can see i burned up the board and did quite the poor solder job lol

So how should i approach diagnosing and fixing this thing?

I actually repaired my Sega CD Model 1 at the beginning of this year. I followed this guide to repair mine. If the internal battery is dead, replace it with a rechargeable ML2016. Also, the Sega CD won't work if the Genesis is in overclock mode. Add a switch for normal speed and overclock speed to ensure the Sega CD and 32X work.

Is it possible to overclock both systems the same ratio so they work together?

I'm not sure. I never heard of overclocking the Sega CD. I don't even know if it is possible.

I'm going to try to cleanup what i can

Edit : is removing the poorly installed resistor, cleaning flux on board and cleaning burnt/crispy board with sandpaper a good COA?

It sure looks that way lol

I removed the old resistor, any suggestions for cleaning the board properly? Should i resolder or replace the surrounding components?

After cleaning it, check to see if the surrounding components aren't fried. If they are, try replacing them.

How would I go about testing the individual components? This is my first dip into hardware modding/engineering/repair, though i've been growing increasingly interested in it

Could someone also point me to the correct guide/doc for the resistor fix on model 2? I'll wait for proper cleaning advice before i go further

The guide I linked earlier should help with the fuse (that green resistor marked F1 on the board). You need to use a multi meter to test them. I'm not sure which settings though.

I'll likely buy the parts tomorrow. But as far as the board condition goes is that still usable? Should i clean with rubbing alcohol then buff the crisp with fine sandpaper?

It would be cool to get this working and improved by the end of this thread

I'm not sure if it is still good. Looks like you burned the power input circuitry area. Be careful with sandpaper, it can damage traces and stuff.

Yes it can but in this case I think they're rebuildable with a working reference shot. Better to remove the garbage with 2000 grit paper and see what is left to work with.

Wouldn't the traces be burned from this? I've never seen such damage from a soldering iron before...

Any burned traces can be replaced with wire.

It wasn't the soldering iron that did the burning, I twisted the feet together of the resistor (14) and powered it on. I'm guessing the board caught on fire when i turned it on before it died again. I'll clean the surrounding area with alcohol then 200 grit paper and bump this thread for further advice/instruction

    Edit : 2000 grit

iirc sega CD is a double sided board, so all you need to worry about is vias really

Way the tracks go from top side of the board to the bottom.
