I can make the assumption that the new Harry Potter film will suck, based on what I know of the series and etc, but theres no way I can KNOW until I've actually watched it. The only people who know right now are Microsoft, Sega and a few guys in between.

My current ping (on DSL, with BitTorrent on 3 comps as well) to this site is 97ms. I don't know where the servers are, but I'm gonna assume they're on the east coast, whereas I'm on the west. Not too bad, conisdering thats around 3000+ miles. Again, I don't know how bad that would be in the real world, but http://www.bluesnews.com/guide/lag.htm claims that lag is negligable at that level. I also read http://rescomp.stanford.edu/~cheshire/rants/Latency.html for a lowdown on lag.

I don't know how theyre planning on doing it, but I suspect a message will be sent over ethernet, such as "P1 Punch 2 at X101.6, Y20.4 and Z55.3" and the game on the recieving end will decipher that as needed, and render it on that side, kinda like playing chess by mail. I send you the coordinates, you move the piece on your board, and vice versa.

That you may be right on, Sega have gone dooowwnnnhilll. Lets hope this isn't another victim.

But I'm basing this known on solid facts of the pre-existing system. Any reason why VF has failed online up until this point? There's a good reason. They've never wanted to sacrifice the engine, which is leaps and bounds above any of the competitions.

That sounds possible. Remember, the messages have to come back though. So east cost vs. west cost is looking at 200ms to complete and confirm each move. As someone who works in an industry where 200ms is an eternity, I can tell you, that's not very good.

Right... that's in theory, how it would work. The issue is, you can only send X moves per second... the current game demands more than traditional ethernet is possible of handling.

Just like every other Sega franchise, it is. This game isn't nearly as popular as VF4 was either. I assume part of this focus on online is to make up profits in the west.

Hey! Even the hardcore DOA players complain about how poorly DOA plays online. =P

Something like that. Each move is made of frames that contain how long the execution, hit, recovery are. Then there's the hit levels, character's spacing and movement, and what have you. All this at 60fps... It's going to be like playing a completely different game.

Then for now I accept defeat, and say that we'll see in a few weeks. I do admit that I hate online gaming, I've never really done it. CS is full of hax0rs and bots, COD has too many 14 year olds screaming pre-pubescent insults at me and Star\Warcraft is too hard (and my Korean isn't too great).

...Maybe I'm just in denial about Sega going to pot. I played the Sonic 360 demo today. I wanted to remove my eyes with a melon baller.

One thing that should be noted is that only 8 people will buy the 360 version in Japan. Home versions of a game like this are use mainly for one thing: to hone your skills for arcade competition. The 360 version will make you a worse player, arguably. Nobody in Japan has a 360 anyway. In the US, there are no arcades. That's what really sucks about this generation... the two markets are so far apart from each other, it's getting harder to make games that appeal to everyone (and that everyone will buy).

    Thank God for Mame.

It's not being released in Japan.

And that's kinda the issue Square are having with FF13. Go PS3-exclusive, and no one in the west will get it. Go dual-platform, and it costs more money, and they won't visibly see the difference in Japan (apart from their sales numbers, maybe)

Wow... but not so shocking. It does seem silly though. I could localize the game either way in a long weekend.
