I´ve seen tons of mega cd 2. But I think never the first model. How rare is this add-on? Does anyone here on assembler own it?
With 3300 members into "rare", you can expect someone here to own just about anything much less a Mega CD.
MCD1's are much less common than MCD2's but they're still common. You can get the PAL version complete + boxed normally for about 150€.
NEC Laseractive with a Sega pac is probably the rarest you are going to get for a rare Mega CD. Followed by a Sega Wondermega then an asian Multimega.
If using original hardware is important to you, the Mark I is also easier to repair since it has big honking internal parts and a standard, easy-to-replace Sony CD lens mechanism. It's also the easiest to put a custom ROM into, in case you want to change the region or do other fun BIOS tricks. The Mark 2 is quite a bit harder to fix, and the CDX/Multimega units are damned near impossible to diassemble or to reassemble.
I recall seeing like 15 or more brokem CDXs in my local game store back in 94-95. The clerks would take them for repairs, but never return any (fixed).
They don 't ship well. The Japanese model has a loose optical drive, that is moved up and down by a screw type mechanism. It flops up and down and breaks. However, a USA drive can be swapped in with the IO board to make a repair. I think the huge mega cd 1 is the most appealing, with the Japanese model the best (it has better sounds and graphics on the menu)
Yep MCD1 is the best looking unit, MCD2 is a bit dull especially in PAL version, Jap version is quite nice though... I actually have a spare PAL MD1/MCD1 unit complete no box, if you are interested PM me. Sabre
yeah, but you get virtually drowned in MCD2 units. MCD2 + Mega Drive II + 32X goes for 50€ sometimes. MCD2 alone for 20-30€. MCD1 - never seen one below 100€. If you just want to play the games, get a MCD2. If you want something cool, get the MCD1. Always wanted one myself, got a few CDs along with dozens of asian MD carts from a friend.
I could do to my local car boot sales and come back without about 10 Mega CD 1 units in various conditions. Seems to be an area thing. I've never actually seen a MCD2 with my own eyes.
Boxed PAL MCD1 units are way rarer than the US and JP versions though, thats at least the impression I have.
http://oldengineer.com/gallery/v/sega/sega-packaging.jpg.html ^ A piccy of a PAL box. ...I bought my MegaCD on the day of release, hellish expensive it was, may even still have the receipt for it somewhere!
iirc, the megaCD came out quite late here in Germany, at a time where the Mega Drive II was almost out the door. Due to the high price the unit had at the start it never sold that well, that came later with the MCD2 which startet out cheaper and looked better with the slimmer Mega Drive II. Some markets (Spain) never even got the Mega CD I. Same with Brazil.
