Sega / Sammy just lost half a billion dollars. We may yet see another merger or eventual bankruptcy...
Hey man, I loved Sega when they were a good company. But I always felt they should've just gone out with the Dreamcast, as opposed to driving their name and the franchises I grew up with further and further into the ground.
Lets get this into prespective... The pachinko business loses a lot of money The game centre businesses have serious troubles which includes their China operations. The arcade business suffers a downturn Game sales however have seen an increase. With a 20% increase over last year. Anyone saying that Sega will die, needs to face up to the fact that they are doing quite well.
I love sega.... Sure, some of their newer titles suck, but I have faith in them to make lots of money on said sucky games, and eventually be restored to their former glory and start making unique, awesome, and downright wierd games again.
Even if games are selling, if the company as a whole goes belly up, it takes any profitable divisions with it. It's not like Sega would just hit an ejector seat and somehow survive. I am guessing they will sell off lots of assets, close most of the arcades, and focus on sega / pachislo. However, one does not simply shake off half a billion in losses.
You've got to wonder on the long term value of a company that makes its money from machines that wurr and flash when you dump a load of ball-bearings into them. I couldn't help but laugh at reasoning - we've held back a number of major titles. Haha! Still, I am very sad to see such negative results from the company and from the coments people are making here in this thread. *shakes fist*
Looks like we've got a cockeyed optimist here. The real Sega died in 2003, and that's all she wrote. The likelihood that Sega will ever be "restored to their former glory" is, I would say, zero percent at best.
It's F*ing Sammy and their F*ing pachinko shit that's killing Sega. In fact it's Sammy that's killing Sega full stop! face it, even back in the 8 bit and 16 bit days ANYTHING released by Sammy on home consoles then was complete shit just like now. This week I'm really getting back in to F-Zero GX on the Cube but now in Progressive scan / Widescreen thanks to the Wii. This is what Sega was all about. Amazing visuals with gameplay to match. i seriously believe that if Sega merged with the likes of Namco or Konami we'd still be getting this level of quality rather than the crap we get now. Sega would have had more money, kept it's talented programmers and still made fans happy. Sammy, shite name, shite games, shit full stop! yakumo
At least it was just US dollars. I dunno. I don't like Sega nowadays. I agree with JP. I don't think there's anyway they'll go back to being SEGA.
From a business sense Microsoft should have bought out Sega, after all they practically copied the Dreamcast formula for Xbox. They could have even branded the original Xbox as a Sega console, and would have had the money to fund properlly developed Sonic games and so on. Perhaps the xbox could have done well in Japan then.
SEGA should die alredy and be remembered as a great company in the 90's and early 00's. Don't keep fucking up all the great sagas.
