Around 2001. I have read in PlayStation Magazine (croatian edition) that in 2001. SEGA will release port of some Saturn games to PS One. Was there any official statement or this was poor speculation? I mean, in 2001. and 2002. PS One was stil popular console, and its strange to me that they didnt relase ports of Saturn games to console. After quick google search found this: Sega's PlayStation Games Coming This Summer In an interview with GameWeek at Toy Fair 2001 in New York, Sega's VP of marketing and communications, Charles Bellfield revealed some more details about Sega's plans for the original PlayStation platform. According to Bellfield, Sega will announce specific titles in April and the first batch of games will be released in summer 2001. The games will also be priced at $19.95 and a port of Panzer Dragoon is NOT slated for PlayStation. Boo! Do you have more information? EDIT: just found that SEGA release two games for PS One in 2002. and 2003. - JP only. WoW this info is new for me
I believe this was the start of the whole Sega AGES 2500 initiative. Never knew they had plans at targeting PS1 though...
Hm, SEGA Ages 2500 started in 2003., and from 1996 to 1998 there was SEGA Ages for Saturn... Its strange that they cancelled plans for PSX ports of Saturn games. They could also port Mega Drive games... To bad for PSX owners
Never heard of this before, interesting and weird at the same time. It was weird enough on it's own though that SEGA released the NAOMI "Shakkato Tambourine!"-game for PsOne and not for Dreamcast :O!
Yeah, I knew there was Sega Ages on Saturn. I kinda assumed at some point they realized they were going to need to start developing for other platforms before the official declaration of leaving the console era. Thus the development towards Sony with Sega Ages 2500. That's more or less a guess on my part however. Still interesting nonetheless.
The Tambourine game is a spiritual successor to Samba de Amigo and for some reason was never ported to the Dreamcast despite being a Naomi game. I guess since SdA didn't sell that well they didn't wanna risk another flop when the system was already dead.
I found original interview here. GW: We found it ironic that the day Sega announced it was pulling out of the hardware market was the same day Phantasy Star Online went on sale. A consumer says to themselves "hey, wait a minute, I'm going to the store to buy this great game and now they're telling me they're done with the hardware, what's up with that?!" CB: I know. In the end though, we need to pay the bills. Now we look at other opportunities. Sega Master System games on cell phones will be a reality this year. Genesis content on PDAs and Game Boy Advance… that's going to happen. You know, it would be so easy for us to become the biggest publisher on Game Boy Advance. Literally overnight. Then there are the Saturn games for the PSX market. We've got a great selection of franchises and licenses for us to bring over at a $19.95 price-point. GW: When will you ship the Saturn-to-PlayStation ports? CB: Summertime. GW: Specific titles? CB: We can't announce them until April. This if from February 2001. Does this mean that they started development of ports?
We briefly discussed this subject here (Shining Force III inside). Edit : on a related note, a port of Ecco on GBA was announced months before Sega pulled out the hardware market and the Sonic team got GBA dv kit around october 2000. (Consoles + 107 - december 2000) Source.
Thanks for info. I digged more and from later interviews from 2001. and 2002. there arent mention of PSX games. (1,2,3,4) Only February 2001. article mention PSX ports of Saturn games. IGNPSX spoke with Sega of America's VP of Corporate and Marketing Communications, Charles Bellfield, today about the company's plans to port existing Sega Saturn software to Sony's comparable 32-bit PlayStation platform. While, he wasn't able to confirm any specific titles, Bellfield did give us some additional insight on the company's plans. First of all, there are a large number of projects that are being worked on at this time and have been in development for quite some time. Furthermore, the games being worked on are mostly direct ports of Saturn games, while some are actually upgraded versions of games previously released on Saturn. Bellfield even went on to say that there are even some Dreamcast software titles that are being considered for development on the regular PlayStation/PS one platform. Basically, the company plans to do any game for the original PlayStation that it thinks can sell well on Sony's aging console. Well this is interesting part - large number of projects (5 - 10?), Dreamcast games considered for porting to PSX. How much time is needed for creating port? They had plan for summer 2001. release for first wawe of games. Development started in middle to late 2000.? Does this mean that games were near completion? Maybe someday something surface? EDIT: I will appreciate any help. If you have scans of magazine with this reports please upload it.
The port of Saturn ganes to PlayStation story is true as I clearly remember it being mentioned in the Official Sega saturn mag in the UK. It turned out to be a load of BS in the end but as I said, the story is true.
Talking about Puyo²: (Interview made in 2004) Puyo Puyo Sun was first published in 1997 by Compile on Playstation. The game published by Sega seems to be exactly the same. Also, Frédéric Raynal (Alone in the dark, Twinsen's Adventure / Little Big Adventure ...) had been said in december 2000 the Dreamcast was living its last days but he had to keep silence and go on the development of Agartha until Sega officially pulled out the hardware market. Hmm... Could the reason behind the cancellation is how hard it would be to port games from Saturn to PSX - Most ports that were on PSX and Saturn were techincally better on Saturn. Maybe they meant PS2, though ironically most of the games that have been ported on to PS2 and XBOX were mostly either Dreamcast or master System / Mega Drive Games.
I don't recall the original source of this rumour, but the titles I remember being listed as heading to the PlayStation were NiGHTS, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Virtua Fighter 2 and a brand new 2.5D remake of the first Sonic game, plus a port of SegaSoft's Rocket Jockey (along with possibly Vigilance, though I'm not 100% sure about this one). While I've never come across an official excuse, I believe the loss of source code for VF2 may have been a contributing factor - I'll have to go through my old magazine archive to see if I can find anything...
Also read this in the UK's Official Dreamcast Magazine circa February/March 2001, around the time of Sega's "big change".
I think they were too old to be released, also the PS2 was on the market, and the older generation wasn't sega focus.
A lot of people referred to the PS2 as PlayStation though, so it's likely they were talking about that. This could have been one of the games they were talking about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtua_Cop:_Elite_Edition
I think you mean Dreamcast magazines, SSM was long out of print when this story hit in 2001. I remember the story but it was little more than a PR statement by Sega US to try and drum up the idea. Which I understand was killed dead by Sega of Japan as Sega US hadn't done their research. This story can still be found on the net in a few places: http://uk.ign.com/articles/2001/02/03/shining-force-iii-headed-to-playstation Two of the mentioned games were Panzer Dragoon Saga/Azel and Shining Force III. Both of which were never going to happen in Panzer Dragoon Saga case Sega lost/deleted the source code for it. Also the Saturn code wouldn't have run on the Playstation without a heavy rewrite of the code from the ground up. Which would have been far too much work for a straight port. In Shining Force III case, the developer Camelot own the copyright on a number of the Shining the Holy Ark characters that appeared in Shining Force III. As Camelot then under the Sonic Software Planning name had to publish Shining the Holy Ark themselves on the Saturn under license from Sega. Hence why STHA has a third party product code of T-33101G and not a GS code for first party games. Add to that the relationship between Camelot & Sega went south during development of Shining Force III ending with Camelot not wanting to work with Sega ever again. They then went second party with Nintendo around 2000 to get away from Sega and still haven't worked with Sega again to date. Sadly this limbo state effects Julian and Galm who are the main hero and villian of Shining Force III. I also doubt Sega had access to the Shining Force III source code in 2001 and there was no way they were contacting Camelot for it at that point. That said this could have also been IGN badly reporting the Sega/Acclaim deal which saw Crazy Taxi, 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker, Headhunter, Virtua Tennis 2 & more released on the PS2 in 2001/2002.
