This story was certainly doing the rounds as early as 1998 since it was one of the first things I saw when I started frequenting the likes of Seganet and Segaweb just before the Dreamcast's launch in Japan... I literally crashed my high school IT suite's server a few times and would stay behind after everybody else in the afternoons just to download videos of Virtua Fighter 3tb, Sega Rally 2 and Sonic Adventure that these days would probably take a fraction of a second! Anyway, that's enough of a trip down memory lane for now - two more games that I recall being mentioned were Baku Baku and BUG! On the subject of the latter, does anyone else remember an animated series being announced based on this series? This would have been around 1996, and I'm fairly sure EGM covered it quite extensively before the whole project disappeared for good. I'd love to know if anything came of this or whether it was cancelled in the pre-production stages as it's clear Sega was really pushing him as their new mascot until Sonic made a resurgence with the ill-fated Xtreme, closely followed by the Saturn port of 3D then finally Jam and R, which ultimately led into Adventure. By the way, here's an article from before that point detailing SegaSoft's plans to carry over several Saturn-bound titles to the PlayStation, though one didn't even get that far: Formerly the development arm of Sega, Sega Soft operates as an independent software publisher, focusing on games for the Saturn, PC, and Internet. Now, directly contradicting prior statements, Sega Soft plans to make PlayStation games and won't rule out the other next-gen systems as possible homes for its games. Although Sega Soft doesn't currently have a PlayStation license from Sony, the company is "looking into" PlayStation development, according to a spokesperson. "Our primary focus is PC and Internet games, but games for console systems are third in line," the spokesperson said, adding that Sega Soft's tentative PlayStation plans include Three Dirty Dwarves, due out this fall, and a racing game, Roach Rally, due out in early 1997. As far as other systems go, Sega Soft won't rule out development for the Nintendo 64. But Joe Miller, Sega Soft's executive vice president and chief technical officer, says that "until Nintendo provides an optical media format [such as a CD], it doesn't make sense for third-party developers to be in the cart business." For gamers, the move has few real ramifications beyond the addition of another top developer to the PlayStation ranks. It's significant, though, that a company that was once so closely tied to Sega now considers it an important business option to produce games for the Saturn's archrival. As Sega Soft's spokesperson said, "We're an independent company [from Sega] with an independent board. We're tied in name only, and it's an expanding market that doesn't just involve teenage boys anymore. We don't want to be tied down; we want to be involved in the whole gaming industry." (SOURCE: GamePro #085 p16 - August 1996) SegaSoft had quite a few games that failed to materialise on even the Saturn, including Rocket Jockey, Vigilance and now Roach Rally, as documented above. I'm quite sure Obsidian was considered for a Saturn conversion as well, but the commercial failure of this title in its original PC form was effectively responsible for the group's closure, so there's really no way of knowing what might have been on the cards later on.
This is article I was talking about. I manage to copy it from scan of Oficiálnà český PlayStation magazÃn that I found on internet. In UK it was in issue 70 (April 2001) - Homer Simpson is on cover. Apparently croatian edition of PSM only had translated articles and reviews from UK PSM + few original content. If someone have this particular issue, please upload picture of this article in english?
As far as I know, Charles Bellfield is the only person at Sega who ever talk about Saturn games on PS1 and I don't think he ever gives any list of games. By the way, according to Masato Maegawa himself, Sony never had any plan for releasing Radiant Silvergun on PS1 :
If you can find or remember the source, I'd really like to make a article about the Sonic 1 remake at Sonic Retros wiki.
It is indeed there, though Issue 095. See here: http://archive.org/stream/GamePro_I...8_1996-08_IDG_Publishing_US#page/n17/mode/2up
Official Dreamcast Magazine (UK) mentioned that some Sega games were headed to PSone (could be wrong, but I think I remember Sonic and NiGHTS being mentioned). Of course, these magazines could print anything. It was definitely a rumor floating around at the time.
