Heya, I'm not quite sure this is the correct forum, but it was the only one with Sega Saturn in its name =) So anyway, I'm replacing a laser assembly on a Model 1 Sega Saturn (Japanise). I read the following thread first: http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?22027-Sega-CD-systems-repair-thread Which specifies So off I went and ordered an OPTIMA-7 since I guessed the 1 stood for model. However, when moving over the old black "rail", I see that it does not fit. Old laser on top, new on the bottom. When I took this photo, I can see that the old one is marked OPTIMA-6. I totally missed this when taking it apart the first time. I obviously bought the wrong one, which is OK, I have a Model2 that might need a new laser in the future, but just to clarify: Will the OPTIMA-6 fit with the "rail" i must move over (see bottom of first picture)? And is the webpage I quoted above wrong? Model1 use OPTIMA-6 and Model2 uses OPTIMA-7? Or does it simply mean that it can have either and I'm just a moron for not finding the text on the old one first, before ordering a new one? Thanks in advance!
All the Saturns with JVC drives I've seen (including late models) have used the Optima 6 - I can't 100% say that units using the Optima7 don't exist, but I can say I've never seen one - and I've seen a rather large number of Saturns. The plastic rack also seems to be identical between all the JVC drives.
There's no such thing as a model 1 and 2. There are various combinations of plastics, power supplies, PCBs and laser mechs used in Saturns. Identifying them as oval or round button doesn't really narrow things down much, and certainly doesn't help from a technical viewpoint. You're far better off looking at the board version. If you look around, @Druid II has a post on identifying them via the serial number without even opening the machine, but it's easy enough to get in and determine board version... and indeed laser. The replacement for an Optima 6 is the Optima 6S, not the Optima 7.
Thanks for the clarification. Always thought oval button = model 1 & round buttons = model 2. Ordered an Optima 6S from Amazon yesterday.
Technical yes, but theres quite a bit of cross over (what you would consider model 2 guts in a model 1 case, etc). Which is why its best not to buy stuff based on that alone.
