This would be an incredible release, as it was nearly finished when it got canceled. Is there any current info on this game? Here are a couple articles from "back in the day": http://www.gamingenterprisesinc.com/temp/ww.jpg
Yeah, it seems to have similar gameplay to the ship sailing sections of the Mega Drive (also cancelled, but it's out there) and Super Nintendo versions, only the Sega Saturn rendition of this is 3D in Panzer Dragoon esque visuals. Ocean had a like on fully developing and then discarding games for Sega systems, for sure.
If I'm not mistaken this was programmed by Steve Woita, who also did the Virtual Boy version (and has a programming career going back to the Atari 2600).
I do a forum search and no results related... I suppose this prototype is near a beta or final retail version, right?
Right, this was done by Steve Woita and Jason Plumb. From an interview I did with Woita: PVB: "What about the unreleased Saturn version of Waterworld? Was it like the VB version or the SNES version? Or even completely different?" SW: "We had nothing to do with the SNES version. We only did the VB and Saturn versions. The Saturn version was really a great version of what we wanted to do. We had smart bombs floating in the water that you'd use at the right time and take out as many enemies that were visible out in the world. The water was the best water I'd ever seen in a game at that time, Jason Plumb nailed that down. We also had a weapon that shot saw blades out onto the water, and the blades would skim 5 or 6 times before you couldn't see them anymore. We had a bunch of very cool weapons in the game. The Saturn version was completely finished and then Infograms took us over and decided not to release the game. I'd have to say, that even by today's standards, it was one of the best playing and looking games around."
Here I was thinking it was going to be your next release  For a game adaption of a movie though it does look and sound like it would have been an innovative title that may have been worth it.
Hehe... either Saturn or Dreamcast should be the target platforms for the next one. As you can see, this time it's LOBO for the Mega Drive/Genesis what we are talking about. And concerning Waterworld for the Sega Saturn, who has the prototype?
Thanks for the info, KR155E! I didn't know the game was completely finished. That is great news. I've been wanting to play this ever since reading those original magazine articles. Maybe some day I will get the chance...
I ended up sending an email to Steve Woita. Here is his response: "Hi Kent, It does exist! I really like playing it, but I'm kind of biased towards it I may be wrong about this, but I think the problem will be getting the OK from Universal, or who ever owns the rights to any WaterWorld products. I would really like to have the game out there and be playable on emulators or what ever. I think people would love the game. I'm just thinking back and there were only three of us working on that game from start to finish. If you've got any legal ideas on how to make this game available to the masses, I'd love to hear it! Cheers, Steve Woita Senior Game Designer / Producer / Developer Eat Donuts, play DunkIt 2 at: http://www.tinygames.com" Lets figure this out & get this game released !!
The only legal way I know of would involve getting a license from the current rights holder, but these usually only work when there is at least a little profit to be had. I've never tried with 'just' a release. You can show him my site (I think he's been to it before), I've released a bunch of unreleased games and nobody has sued me... yet.
is this just a game made for sega or where there snes pc psx waterworlds as well. anyway just tell him to send it to hidden palace.
