In the opinion of many, Mario games are just run and jump to the end of the level. Sure, there are obstacles here and there but so are there in pretty much any platform game. Mario is over rated because it was the first (or one of) of it's kind to brake away from the old Atari style of platformers. You could say that Sonic is over rated because it was the first to offer such speeds. Either way, each game has it's own fans and each game is great in the opinion of the fans. There's no point saying Mario is better due to the game design because it isn't. Those floating jumps piss me off for a start. There are glitches and bugs just like Sonic. Basically you're either a Mario or a Sonic guy. Not many are both. My son prefers Sonic and this has nothing to do with me. He's played Mario Kart on the SFC and Wii and Arcade (he likes that one) as well as Mario platform games and all the spin off crap oh and the brawling games. He's played the Sonic platform games although he can't really play then due to there complexity. He loves Sonic the fighters and All-Star Racing. I asked why he likes Sonic more than Mario to which he replied "Sonic is fun and cool". I don't force my son to play what I like, he's free to choose himself. Anyway, back on topic. I put the original NiGHTS on yesterday for my son to play and instantly he said, "It's Sonic Racing!" I never though he noticed NiGHTS at the finish line. Anyway, we both had fun with the game although he didn't really know what was going on. I can't wait for the 360 release even if it is just a port of the PS2 remake or at least that's what it looks like. Yakumo
Never underestimate the eye for detail that a child has, particularly if it's a series he loves. Don't forget - kids have a near infinite amount of time to devote to these games, what with no real responsibilities to suck up their time and a built-in 3 month period of absolutely nothing to do every year.
Eh, I think Mario and Sonic are equal. They both have their own pros/cons. I used to enjoy 3D sonic games more than the old 2D ones(Because I sucked mainly) and I used to enjoy the 2D marios more than the 3D ones. But these days i'm not like that and I pretty much like them all the same.
Super Mario 3 and World Reign Supreme. Sonic 2 is really the only sonic game I keep going back to but Sonic 2 is a better designed game than both the Above mentioned Mario games.
Dunno, but there's a demo available on XBLA. EDIT: I just tried the demo. It's pretty cool. It looks really nice and it plays just like the original. About Christmas Nights, it says this at the end of the demo: "Access playable content from Christmas NiGHTS upon successful completion of all dreams." Not sure if that means the entirety of Christmas Nights is included or just part of it. Maybe they plan on releasing it separately at some point, and the content in the first Nights is just a teaser.
I can't wait for the PC release; as I don't own the 360 or PS3. Sadly, nor do I own a Saturn ( I really want one). I wonder what's takin' them so long to get it out on Steam or something...
It has the Christmas Nights level, but none of the extra minigames or playable Sonic. They did add some costumes. I was suprised to find Clarise in a halloween costume in the forest stage, and Elliots unlocks later.
I have it and completed it. It does have Christmas NiGHTS after you complete the game with both characters. It is missing a shit load from the Saturn game though such as the music mode, replays and two player. It does contain what they call "Saturn version" but it's not the Saturn version at all. I'm going to do a side be side video of it on the next Retro Core to point out the differences. Although this new version is missing points from the Saturn game, it does have some nice little extras though which I won't list here incase someone would like to be surprised by them
Thank you for the replies, all. My XBOX has died, so I cannot test this out. It probably makes more sense to replace the xbox than to get yet another Saturn whilst I am here in Japan (I have SO much kit back home in the UK). This would be a lovely game to play at Christmas. Even just doing the standard game with Christmas theme and music would be better than nothing at all (like last Christmas for me). My girlfriend has never played the game, but I showed her a youtube video the other day and she liked the look of it. Another question: are any of the xboxes less prone to RRoD? I have the HDD from my dead one, but could "start again" as I won't buy a data transfer kit. Ugh.
I'd say it's worth the $10 it is missing saturn extras but it is a pretty game and plays better than the PS2 version.
I'd say so, yes. Like I said, it's missing a few points from the original but it does look very nice and still an excellent game for score attacks. The controls do seem a little off but I would put that down to the height of the analogue stick on the 360 and PS3. The Saturn analogue stick as you know was pretty flat. Still, after an hours of play you'll never notice the difference. @Martin, get any 360 from the year 2009 onwards. They're all pretty solid. My 360 is an Elite that I bought in November 2009 (Jasper model) and use every day for gaming or streaming movies or TV shows from the PC to the TV. Never had any issues with it so far.
I beat this a few days ago, excellent game. I played Journey of Dreams first so going into this I had an idea of what the gameplay would be like. I really think Nights in an underrated series, it can convey so much emotion with minimal story telling. The music just enhances the experience too. Any SEGA fan needs to pick this up, now!
I was thinking about getting this, but wasn't all too sure about it. Since I own both Christmas NiGHTS and NiGHTS on Saturn.
