Is the gaming world so persistently chauvinistic that we need the likes of Jade Raymond and G4tv's sluts to represent the female segment of the gaming population (or rather, to appeal to the nerdy underclass)? Come to think of it I am not aware of any self-respecting female gaming journalists at the moment. Sure, there were the likes of Violet Berlin and Kate Russell (the one who co-hosts Click, she was a huge Sega fan and appeared once alongside Violet).. Hmm who else? Oh yea there was Sam from Sega Mag back in the day, and a few other reviewers in game magazines. But it seems the bigger gaming grows the sillier the women need to be. (though I'm sure in this case Ellie chose to act silly for the hell of it :110: )
It's to appeal to the new less intelligent and more generic gamers. You know the ones that can't wait to play Halo 14: Spartan Nursing Home.
I think it's cool when girls play games and don't make a huge deal about it, but it can be annoying when you want to play Rock Band and they just fail out of everything....lol.
I find the G4TV female hosts to be amusing as well. I can't see Olivia Munn playing games at all, just fumbling with a controller while her boyfriend plays. Morgan Webb I can see playing games but really G4 is selling an image of the "girl gamer" regardless of what the reality is.
I don't think Violet would be happy that you refer to her in the past tense! She runs WhizzBang TV now. OK, most of her work in the past few years hasn't been game-related, but she has done bits. Talking of bits, you're forgetting that show! OK, it was scripted and what have you, but they had a rock chick attitude rather than being slutty. Aleks Krotoski is very much in the industry still, mostly working with the Guardian. Emily Newton-Dunn works at EA and produced Burnout from Revenge to Paradise. And Emily Booth is still an actress. I remember one review site had a woman review Bikini Samurai Squad, and all the retarded weeaboo nerds said it was biased because it wasn't reviewed by a horny 13 year old weeaboo boy. I think she did a good job, she said it was crap that idiots only wanted because of badly animated PS2 quality T n A. I totally agreed on every point. I wonder why people are obsessed with Japanese crap to the point of defending super shitty budget titles? Aside from that, I think the opposite is true for male gamers. Here is a picture that I think sums up crap like G4TV: *note* Not saying all gamers look like that, but not every gamer looks like a supermodel. I guess if you shaved the guys beard, that might even resemble a gamer girl somewhere...lol. Oh yeah, and speaking of G4TV, it seems like they're doing everything in their power to make it a channel about nothing but old cops and cheaters reruns....WTF?
You should all remember that people who appear on TV shows aren't actually "journalists," they don't get the job becasue of their dedication and integrity. They get it becasue they look good and can read lines. So most of the people you see on these shows (including mainstream TV news) the person there on the camera doesn't actually do any of the investigating. Remember they are there to sell advertising. They don't represent anything, especially any larger female gaming demographic.
I remember at least one italian girl used to be a presenter on Game Network that we received here in the U.K around about 2000 or 2001, think there may have been another couple of girl presenters but it's been a long time and i really can't remember much exept those bloody Legend of Mir programs. *EDIT* Just looked it up, original girl was GJ Betina, followed by GJ's Maria, Alison and Charlie.
Oh yea I remember GN! It was ruined when the Italians completely took over though.. kept running music vids all day with no real content.
Most gamers were never that smart, dont you guys remember all the crap that was around when we were kids? and how people would buy it anyway?
fixed for truth To be honest, I didn't really notice that there are generic model girls being used as representatives of female gamers as I rarely watch any of those shows over at IGN or GameTrailers, actually I never watch them. Anyway, even if chauvisnism has gained control over the gaming press, that's not really surprising. Braindead model chicks are advertising products and moderating stupid TV shows for decades, now gaming has become popular and is being treated with the same kind of dumb moderators as the other parts of popculture.
G4 TV is nothing more than a long videogame commercial. It's all hollywood mumbo jumbo. Which is why I don't watch it. Remember that one girl from TechTV's Screen Saver? I think it was Megan. She had dark hair and was overall very cute. She was in it for real, but the other chick that is still around (she does give BJs, trust me on that) she's just there for show.
Well, if it helps I think that more females are getting into gaming, but mostly I suspect that blaming the gaming industry for being 'persistently chauvinistic', then moaning about the 'G4tv's sluts' is kind of like the pot calling the kettle black! It's all good!
Do any of you know these people? If not, then how do you know if they are gamers or not? So far this thread just seems to be based entirely on assumptions.
I heard that Morgan Webb was addicted to WoW, and someone took a picture of her playing it, and they said she looked all haggard and shit.
I had been watching it since the days it was called ZDTV. I pretty much watched TechTV exclusively, and I was pretty angry when G4 took them over. G4 seriously sucks balls... I tried to get into it, but it just wasn't the same.
Yeah, when we first got sattelite forever ago I thought it was badass we finally had TechTV then suddenly it's replaced with this crap. I remember seeing an ad for G4 fucking years ago thinking it might be cool too, lol.
no one wants to play rock band mate :110: i hate it when girls get so excited when they beat you at a game you gave them a massive head start on well i say hate but........
