In what way are the two related? My point is, this is just going to degenerate into a Sony hate thread. I would personally keep it for the PS2 chipset inside it, but if you need the money and backward compatibility if not important then sell it. Like you say, until next year there is not anything must have for the PS3.
I say dont sell it for less than $400... Selling it for $300 while you payed $500 means you're loosing 200 bucks, almost the price of a Wii or a base X360. And I doubt there will be a PS3 for just 300 bones in less than a year (when MGS4 is released) so you're not only loosing money by selling it, you'll loose even more money by having to buy it again when theres good games for it. And believe me, the PS3s with PS2 hardware will become a valuable collectible down the road, specially when the PS3 becomes more mainstream and the PS2 production ceases forever. Is too late to sell it, and also too soon...
the whole reason to buy new consoles is to play games on them. The long term investment line is garbage. You don't drop $599 on a console to play games on it 2 years later. You might as well just wait until MGS4 is actually out, and buy the ps3 at a lower price anyways. There's people who want the ps3's with ps2 BC in it, so sell it with that noted at ebay or wherever. I'd probably be interested if you're interested in selling it in the $300 range. PM me with any extra details.
You know, I just saw a vid of that the other day, and having just beat Tomb Raider, it really does look like nearly the same thing. I think the built in PS2/PS1 might be handy, less systems to hook up, but you can make a lot of money by selling it too.
My point is that he already payed the console, and selling it would mean an instant loss of $200 bucks. The console itself has no operational cost beyond the energy IF used. Its not like a car which needs fuel and regular maintenance, or storage costs if you're not using it. Plus he said he has no money problems, in fact he's getting more money soon so theres no rush to sell the PS3.
I'd sell it unless you can find exclusive games you really want to play and actually with buy. There really isn't a point in hanging onto it if you don't use it as the hardware will only get cheaper. The only sticking point would be if you want to hang onto it for its PS2 HW BC features as the BC feature could end up phased out entirely.
