My God, this is the most shocking news since my beloved teen idol Tomokichi "Johnny" Yamada was caught smoking that demon weed, marihuana! (I hear some foreigner in Roppongi sold it to him)

Relevance of what? Do you even understand the statement? Surely our JPN residents, whom this was aimed at, will.

No surprise how this is being treated. Sucks that they think they can just make it look like a problem due to foreigners though. Did she think that was going to help her case any?

I'm sure that sort of statement would make no difference here. Us white guys are just scapegoats for these whores who mess up aren't we? :(

I've never been to Japan, but I don't think I'll ever take drugs there.

That is a wholly pathetic story - for one tiny speck of speed?!

Speed for christs sakes?! That's the drug of choice for the medical profession (long hours) and punks (cheap). Hardly a big taboo busting drug like heroin, crystal meth (ICE) or crack? Sounds like JP and Singapore have a lot in common... and Dubai.

Let's not forget Mario and his 'magic mushrooms', though.

Interesting to compare the coverage in Japan for this female singer and the UK coverage of Kerry Katona, who was just filmed snorting a line of coke the other day. God only knows what the Japanese would have made of our Kerry. She apparently had (has) a pub tray under her bed loaded to the gunnels with coke! Hardly a little speck! Not only that, to make matters worse (and this was the bit that finally shocked most UK people) she was snorting coke whilst "her kids were downstairs!"

japanese do hardly differentiate when it comes to illegal drugs, which means almost every drug in existence, but alcohol and tabacco goods.
you can be a junkie or a simple weed smoker -> you're doomed anyway!

i've tried to start a good talk about LSD once, about the good and curing sides of that "drug" if used wisely (medicinally), but that's just impossible here. 1st they know a shit about, 2nd it's an illegal drug so it's doomed already from the first and 3rd they generally don't like to talk about things which are illegal or doomed or postmarked as evil etc.

Yeah, here's lots about any country that will get on your nerves. God knows there's lots about my beloved adopted country New Zealand that does. There's even more about the UK that got on my nerves which is of course, why I left. Comes a point where the negatives out weigh the positives and you have to work out an escape plan.

I agree 100% with Tatsujin. I've had the same discussions, and it's impossible to get through to people whose concept of drugs is: bad = bad = bad. I get blank stares when I suggest that "alcohol and tobacco also = bad".

So I gave my students homework over the holidays to do a little research -- in English -- on the harm levels of all drugs, and to imagine why the laws regarding booze, cigarettes, and "others" are the way they are.

(The answer is given away here: http://leisureguy.wordpress.com/2006/07/31/intriguing-idea-classify-drugs-by-their-harm-potential/ )

What's the joke? The graph is an attempt at a scientific "harm" rating of drugs by doctors and other experts in that field. I'd say I would trust them, and the graph, generally speaking.

(The UK laws might be construed as a joke...)

alcohol unclassified? alcohol is one of the most harmful drugs known to mankind.

    2006 figures (for U.S.):

    • Number of alcohol-induced deaths, excluding accidents and homicides: 22,073
    • Number of alcoholic liver disease deaths: 13,050
    • Number of weed-induced deaths, excluding accidents and homicides: 0

but from what kind of harm do we talk here? pure toxical? destroying our body? blast your mind? only with abuse of over doseing?
i never would put LSD or xtc into the same class as heroin and Crystal meth? and magic mushrooms also class a? and amphetamine as class a/b? c'mon;-)

Please read the article and its links to answer the questions by alphagamer and Tatsujin.

Quick: "unclassified" means no penalties for possession, whereas Class A,B,C refer to the penalties for possession in the British system. You're assuming it means "harmless" or "unrelated" or whatever you're inferring without fully reading. As for the "harm" scale, it is an aggregate of several factors.
