You mentioned Crash. Naughty Dog was and still is owned by Sony. They're kind of like Sony's equivalent of what Rare was to Nintendo. Speaking of PS1 platformers, I was reading about Croc the other day. Apparently it originally started out as a proposal Argonaut made to Nintendo for a 3D platformer starring Yoshi for the N64. Argonaut developed the SuperFX chip and worked with Nintendo on Star Fox. Nintendo rejected their proposal, which ended their relationship with Argonaut. So Argonaut had to find another company to produce and publish the game, and the end result was Croc. Apparently Nintendo took some inspiration from Argonaut's original proposal when they were developing Super Mario 64. In other words, Nintendo screwed over Argonaut despite having a good relationship with them in the past, and then they stole their ideas.
I've also read this. Taking inspiration from and stealing ideas from are two separate things, although I do understand what you're getting at. If they did indeed steal ideas, I'd like to see which ones and how they were implemented. Yet unfortunately I probably never will. I'm just confused as to why a proposal denial ultimately led to a severed relationship. It didn't have to happen that way, and it sounds like a pretty extreme response. Then again, I could be missing information about all that.
purchased shovel knight a few days ago from psn. loving the game. these new games made with retro feel are great fun and a welcome break from AAA title releases. sometimes it's nice to just kick back and play something simple and retro.
