Hello, I've always ask myself what was the best recommendation to play those console on. Some people said through RGB on a CRT FLAT TV others said through COMPONENT on a HD TV. From your point of view those console were created in mind for CRT TV's (period of that time) or LCD? Thanks!
You'll get the best picture through branded(m$,sony, nintendo) scart rgb cables connected to sony trinitron.
At that point, the displays the developers expected most people to be using were 4:3 aspect ratio standard definition CRT TVs. Most of the consoles support at least 480p/EDTV modes with limited (normally very limited) support for 16:9 or HD modes. If you are driving a HDTV then 480p is a much better starting point than 480i because there is no deinterlacing needed.
TriMesh makes a great point. The Dreamcast can now be modded for HDMI and the Gamecube has both a HDMI mod and external plug and play HDMI adapters that use the Digital AV port, making connections to modern HDTVs that much easier. With low lag LCDs a thing, I highly recommend this for those two consoles in 480p mode. For games that can't be forced to 480p or look better in 240p/480i, RGB on a Sony PVM/BVM CRT is my recommendation. The original Xbox should be connected with YPbPr component cables to something that supports 1080i, however, like a Sony BVM D Series CRT or modern HDTV IMO. The PS2 is an entire thread on its own....
