Not sure if this was suggested before, but some of the Rank images are way too big (bigger than some users avatars).
I like the fact that they are videogame related, but I think they make the threads/posts too clunky.

May I suggest to use smaller pictures?

Suggested a few times and shot down or ignored an equal number of times.

^^ can vouch for that, there's a few threads, a rant site fund is one place there was suggestions by others too.
    ...
i don't have issue with images (adblock works IF the image address is consistent, that alters as users reach certain post counts, keeping up is the theme) but can appreciate the objective, that said, if images are to be addressed, no point stopping there and refine the other forum stuffs too...:smile-new: (standardized bbcodes)

I vote for them to be removed completely.

Personally I do not mind them. Even though I find the amount of free space on some posts to be kind of ridiculous, I do not feel like it really hinders my ability to search and use the forum.
I might even say it adds a bit of charm and airyness.

Don't get me wrong; I'm ok with avatars and other preferrably small images to identify the user, and I don't mind pictures for ranks, and I definitely like some space between posts.
I just feel some rank images are too big.
I can live with it; I have for the 6+ years I've been a user (and a couple more when I browsed as a guest).

    Off-topic:
MaxWar's screenshot of Bad's post shows Bad's location as: UK; however I see it different... Browser issue?

People who intentionally use the weakness of vb to annoy everyone will hardly have themselves taken seriously.
Just because the field allows 40 characters, doesn't mean you should. But some people see the ability to do something
as a reason upon itself to do so. "Oh, I can make a 256 character user name?": Makes 256 character name.

bad_ad84 is a bit hard to deal with at times, but I appreciate him for what he is and the contribution he brings.

Life is like a slide bar, the more it swings to intelligence or creativity, the less social ability remains on the other side of the slider.

So the whole "Hihihihihihih" thing is basically a way of saying "look how clever I am"

What it really says is "I will push every boundary not set just because I can"

For me, it's an easy way of seeing who doesn't mesh well with the community and needs the have an eye kept on them.

"hihihihihihi" is simply an immature and juvenile attempt to get a reaction and response.

As to the large icons, it's intentional social engineering. It helps distinguish those who post almost nothing (who have tiny icons)
from those who are part of the community (larger, more colorful icons)

It's absurd to think that someone who contributes all the time, and has a ten year account with 8000 posts should have the same visibility as someone with 120 posts.

It's like ranks in the military, and no, I am not changing it.

    ahh?!
i thought i was spiked, or my browser was drunk?!?!?!
yeah, i see the 'HIHIHIHIHIHIHIHIHI' bit, pretty slick to make the internet see that!
    ...
neutral toward it, caused no issues, lulz. (not if it's a dangerous exploit, which it really shouldn't be..)
sigils and stuff have NO bearing how this user perceives others, it's what the say in posts that count. :wink-new:
    i wasn't here, ignore! :witless:

You overestimate people. The standard for this is medals. The more you do, the more you have.

    Olympics
    Military
    All Sports

It needs to be a quick, visual method.

If you have a better method, please let me know.

I'm not advocating the removal of ranks. If you are going to entice people to be more active/achieve more then you have to provide something people have actually shown interest for. I have never seen anyone brag about the size of their post box. Not to mention you can artificially make it larger with a sig which makes it even more silly. A bigger focus on titles would probably be my pick. Start by limiting it to one title per user. The more titles there are on your profile the less they matter, and people bother to keep track of them. The first titles ought to be a little demeaning, but not enough to offend. Make sure as the person ascends in position to peddle to their ego. So you could begin with something like noob, regular member, honorary member, exalted member etc. Or noob, casual gamer, real gamer, hardcore gamer and pro gamer. If you stick your guns to the medal system you have now make the medals smaller (and maybe put them on the sig). Make the higer ones animated. Right now it looks like people have a ton of avatars.

edit: Got more ideas. In addition to titles you could have usernames that change color and/or font. Start with plain looking text and moving into bolded and different colors/fonts.(Gradients of the same color?) I also like restricting colored post text on posts to power users and keeping others on normal black text, but if you use too many colors then it looks silly. You must agree that someone with posts of a color you can't use is eye catching.

edit2: Not much of a fan of this one, but you can also concentrate on avatars. Newbies don't have the ability to use one. After x number of posts they are forced to use some kind of crummy and small avatar (startled dog anyone?) Next is the ability to choose from still mini, but not awful selection, but no custom choices. Finally they can use what they please, but if they want to use bigger avatars they have to post even more. Similar to what you have in mind.

Oh crap... sorry about that Bad! Didn't mean to get you in trouble :(

I guess I have to focus a little more on each thing I do, instead of multitasking like there's no tomorrow all the time...

Like many have done, adblock the large images if they bother you to the extreme.

Uhh... I dunno what it's like for you, but for us it's:

    1 stripe - lance corporal
    2 stripes - corporal
    3 stripes - sergeant

    then....

Turn those on your side and you get....

    or even the likes of...

Medals and awards are handed out for exceptional physical or mental prowess, not for the mere quantity of doing something x times. Postcount is a mere statistic, and should be treated as such.

This is the only solution right now. You also need userstyles to remove the excess empty space between the end of your post and your signature.
