Guess I am eating crow about the WiiU not being able to play Gamecube discs. I must have misunderstood something I had read, either way thats good new to me.

To be fair, at the moment there is no way to play GameCube games on Wii U directly from the disc. The only way at the moment is by creating a digital backup of a disc you already own with a modded Wii.

Right now the Wii U just spits out the GameCube disc if it's inserted into the console. A modded Wii can play DVD movies despite Nintendo disabling it, so it's not like Nintendo is above restricting it's disc drive capabilities on a software level. I wouldn't be surprised if the Wii U could technically read GameCube discs and Nintendo disabled it just like they did with DVD movie playback.

I wouldn't expect them to make it work though. Why go through the hassle (or not) of making it work when they could just add the games to the virtual console and make us buy it digitally? Sound familiar? Especially with this controller adapter, it's almost like they're prepping for a GameCube section to be added to the virtual console.
