I have a SNES that had the video and sound go out on it. I replaced all the capacitors to specs to have perfect sound and video. The next day my daughter played the system the whole day while I was at work. I opened it up and double checked it, put it back together just to turn it on to no sound. About an hour after being home the sound turned static and then went out all together. After about a half hour it worked again. But, since it is unreliable loading games with high chances of no sound when it does load. After some work I found that one of the capacitor pads still had a piece of the old capacitor.I removed that piece and re-soldered the capacitor and I added (non-spec mod) of 440uf 16V capacitor to 7805 negative to G and positive to O, I also soldered a 220uf 16V capacitor to the S-ENC B negative to pin 2 and positive to pin 5. I thought everything looked perfect but noticed that a few things seem odd on Secret of Mana, and an issue with Mortal Kombat 2. The rabbits are orange/ brown, the main character has brown overalls and transparent shirt, but all the other colors on the game look perfect and beautiful. Before the mods Mortal Kombat 2 would not load, and now it loads. However, after selecting characters and before fighting the game resets and freezes at the main screen. I will try to provide pictures to show what I am talking about. I am sure with a little help these issues can be resolved. For those of you that are familiar with the game Secret of Mana, this is a screen shot of how it should look like. This is what my game looks like. Correction to my earlier post, both the capacitors for 7805 and the S-ENC B are 470uf 16V. I should have mentioned sooner that my system is a 1992 GPM- 01 This is the picture of the capacitor mod on the S-ENC B I have to take the system apart again. Since, I took these photos the system won't load any games again.
Try cleaning the cart slot. It may not do much to fix the color issue but it might get games running again.
Thank you MonkeyBoyJoey. I had already cleaned the cart slot, so I took it apart and put it back together turned around facing the other way. It should not make a difference, but it did. Games are loading now. I just have to figure out the color issue. I have been looking through old posts for information. There is soooo much to read on this forum.
It works just color issue, and worked fine before the mod. The mod was to help remove a vertical line issue with all games. The mod video that I watched said to use 220uf 16 capacitor on both the 7805 and S-ENC A. I only have 1 220uf capacitor left and meant to put it on the S-ENC B (which I assumed would be the same as the S-ENC A). However, I noticed after all the work was done that I put 470uf 16V capacitors on both. Should I get more 220uf and switch those out? Is the pin mod on the S-ENC B different than A? On my next day off I can try removing that mod and see how the video looks, and try trial and error.
If the capacitor mod was done for the vertical line issue (which I assume is just a slightly visible beam going down the middle), then i'd say, remove the caps for now. Get your system working reliably with as little to no mods added first. As you said "before the mod, MK2 wouldn't load, and now it does". Thing is, that mod shouldn't have been responsible for making that game work. More likely, reinserting the cartridge is what got it working. Check to make sure all your carts have clean boards too. And, yeh, get more 220uf caps, if that's what the mod asks for... but as I said, remove them for now.
I have merged your 6 consecutive posts. As per the rules, please use the edit button rather than double posting. Thanks! Unfortunately, my merge has rather confused your pictures, because you attached them. In future, I would suggest hosting the pictures elsewhere and hotlinking (see the picture advice thread in the Marketplace if you need suggestions for free image hosting) as attaching isn't the best for editing and moderating posts. As for your issues, be sure you fitted the new caps correctly, check polarity, check for shorts and be sure that the mod is actually going to help (rather than just trusting what someone says on a website). And yes, if the mod says use 220uF caps, use 220uF caps.
Thank you for the help and advice. I will watch how I post in the future. Everything was perfect after I put all the new caps on and before my daughter played it all day and before the mod, so I don't know which the was the problem. I removed the mods, and purchased more 220uf. The problem was present after removing the mods. I will now back track all the new caps by removing them, cleaning the pads and checking for pieces of old caps. I did find one that was probably causing the previous sound issue. There is probably something causing the visual. This serves me right for not wearing my glasses the first time. I will keep everyone posted on the progress, or ask questions if I still have them. Looking through old mod posts has been helping with ideas. I have been checking continuity on the board as I go since I saw that in an old thread. I will look at cleaning the pins again and if Mortal Kombat 2 issue persists after the SNES is working I will take the game apart. I have cleaned all the pads and replaced the caps again. The continuity seems fine on everything around the video chip. I have seen on the internet that it might be an issue with the video chip or ram chip.
There is also talk of the CPU on older models just failing over time and only way to fix is replacing it.
I found nothing after removing all the caps and cleaning up the pads. I don't have schematics for the continuity, but it seems like I have continuity from all the pins on the S-ENC B chip to some point on the board. There were a couple of fuses on the back of the board under the S-ENC B that I didn't find continuity to, and a few pins on the SWRAM chip. I found a couple of legs on the S-ENC B that didn't seem to be sitting flat on the board, so I did a small tab of solder to hold it down. After that I was testing the system to find that nothing has changed, and I blew the pico fuse. Today I will be looking for and ordering a pico fuse and trying to find new chips for the board. I was hoping there was some way I could open up the chips and work on it myself, and maybe retrace the leads with a circuit writer pen or something, but I can't find any info on that kind of repair on the net. Where is the best place to buy the 1.5a pico fuse or is it called something else?
PLEASE use the edit button - I have just merged 4 more threads that you posted consecutively! As per rules: This very forum has a sticky listing suppliers.
