Just thought you all might find this interesting. Seems my game had a factory defect in the stamping of the battery contacts.
As a kid I was always frustrated that this game never saved, but never complained about it to my parents. I finally got around to replacing the battery since I'm about to give it another ago and this is what I find.

No, that's just the patented "Nintendo air conduction system".

I would just install a socket in it as I don't like the thought of soldering and resoldering to a board every 5-10 years if you can avoid it.

That never occurred to me, that will be the next thing I'll do when I replace a cart battery. When I was replacing the battery in Pokemon Silver for a friend the replacement ones had the tabs the wrong way -_-

The original gameboy games can't accommodate a socket neither can gba games. Here a list of carts I've installed sockets in: snes,n64 gbc,n64 memory card. This socket and battery is what I use for n64,gbc and memory cards. Use a normal cr2032 socket in snes carts.
