In just over a week, Ill finally be across the pond. Ill be there on the 19th. Basically, this thread will just be someplace I can ask questions as I think of them, and for you guys to leave me some tips Ive asked this over at ArcadeOtaku, but what relatively cheap beer do you guys drink, and what should I absolutely avoid?
Cheap? London? :noooo: But then again I've only been a few times myself so don't really know the cheap spots. Probably stick to the smaller unbranded pubs or try hitting a chain like Lloyds or Wetherspoons - they do 99p pints (usually Greene King IPA, but they've often run out of it and put something else on). Ales will probably be cheapest wherever you go. Fuller's London Pride was alright from what I remember and will be pretty widespread. It all depends what pub you go to as the selection can be endless. Don't buy Tetlys or John Smiths though unless theres nothing but lager left!
Yes. Prices in London were extreme to begin with so even with a VAT break and sales the prices have dropped from extreme to extortionate. I personally hate london, but many tourists love it and I can see the reasons why. As for beer pah... I don't drink it. Try the cider.
You poor poor bastard, I left London ages ago as it was getting expensive, crap, expensive, crap, crap, expensive, did I mention it was expensive and crap too?
I didn't like the beer at all there. Guinness is well worth a try, but you may need some time untill you kind of like it. I didn't think the other regular kinds of beer such as Foster's or Cider weren't too hot either... actually I ended up drinking Beck's. What picked on me was that the prices were almost the same as in Germany (3 pounds for a pint) but the percentage of alcohol in it is just 4 instead of the normal 4,8-5,3%. There's even a special kind of Beck's available called "Beck's 4"... ^^ Afterall we managed to find a lot of nice pubs, just look around in the Piccadilly/Oxford Circus area.
WTF? If you go to England wanting some beer, buy ales. We are not known for lagers. Generic comerical lagers are not the beer to drink if you want a true experience of the wealth and bredth of what the British beer industry has to offer. Just as I would not go to Germany and drink St Pauli Girl or Warsteiner. Fosters is not even British man. Come on!
I replied at length on AO right at the beginning - think I was the first to post actually, which might say something about me, but I am too busy drinking to care what lol.
Oh dear! Typical American - saying "beer" and not specifying what he means! LOL, you're gonna be jumping in at the deep end, that's for sure! Yes, there are different kinds of beer - lagers, ales, bitters, stouts etc. Then there are other alcoholic drinks like cider - definitely worth a try. To be honest, it is all down to personal taste. If you're a lager fan, you'll find some that you should quite like. You really want to be finding a pub with German lagers, though... and that's not going to be so cheap. Ales are the way to go, though. Or ciders. Wetherspoons is a good idea if you're after cheap alcohol of some description, as mentioned. Cheap doesn't necessarily = good, though! It really is personal preference. Some people don't like ale as much as lager etc. Don't forget that in Britain, our pubs are still to an extent owned and run by breweries. They will serve their own ales etc. So for the decent stuff, you won't find it in all pubs. Hence the necessity for a pub crawl ;-) That said, we have a lot of generic stuff that you'll get anywhere - e.g. Newcastle Brown Ale, Boddingtons and John Smith's (bitter), Guinness (stout), Strongbow, Magners and Bulmers (cider). If you haven't tried Guinness, it's worth a go. You can't go wrong with John Smith's IMHO. If you like your ciders and can find Bushells, it is a very different experience from the likes of Strongbow. It is a flat cider, and doesn't taste very strong (but it is!) so you can pretty much down it, with some lethal consequences!
I say beer because Im not picky lol, Ill try any kind of drink There will be some pub thing on Friday, going to a bunch of different ones. I may die though, gotta see how much I can drink! Wooo. I limit the amount of cider I drink though, that stuff messes me up. On that note, I leave on Wednesday, 2 days from now (hey, gotta factor in other time zones ). Any last minute tips? Gotta make sure my crap doesnt get stolen
So, my flight is in around 7 hours. Should something crazy happen, none of you fools get to fight over my stuff, unless its with money. Sell it all, college fund for my nephew lol (and all HDDs destroyed ) Gettin so close
Same here and we can all meet up I live in Wimbledon - but work in London (city) Great to catch up with fellow ASSEMblers
Do you often find bears roaming the streets of Brussels, then? :110: If we're having a get-together in London, I'll have to see if I can get up. Would be good, if I can afford the train fare!
