Disney shuts it down http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2013/04/03/disney-closes-lucasarts/1 http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2013/04/lucasarts-disney/
Eh. They haven't done much internally worthwhile in some time. Even the license program has mixed results. Amazing to think LucasArts approved of both KOTOR (good) and that PC port job on Force Unleashed (bad).
Jesus, man.... Right in the childhood. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLcr-Geuty8 So long, old friend.
I'm surprised it wasn't sooner since the only LucasArts game I can name off the top of my head that came out in recent years is Star Wars Battlefront II. Sure there's that Dark Jedi game, but all the company has going for it is just their Star Wars games. Plenty of point-and-click adventure fans have already jumped ship a decade ago.
It's true, the old gray mare just ain't what she used to be... Still sad to see her die. I think Disney already owns the Monkey Island IP, but they licence it to Telltale. The Sam & Max IP went back to Steve Purcell when LA's licence lapsed, and he took it to Telltale as well. Really they had no IP of their own at the end.
Shame, 1313 and First Assault looked very promising. Last game I played developed by them was TFU, which I loved. I still haven't gotten around to playing the 2nd and I don't know if I ever will because the ending of the first felt like it should've just been left there.
They've made bullshit recently, everyone mentioned the word "arts" should be removed from Lucas. Oh well.
Full Throttle 2 already went like 10 years ago when it was canceled. LucasArts were never going to make a sequel, but now it's actually more likely if Double Fine could get the license. If you don't like the Monkey Island series, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle or Sam & Max Hit the Road, you're a horrible person. First Assault looked promising? It looked like another CoD/Battlefield clone with a passing resemblance to Star Wars.
Too bad, I was really a fan of their games from the 90s to the early/mid 2000s. If someone really wants me to I could list all the great titles they had, there were quite a few for the Arcades, PC, N64, PS1, 3DO, Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox. Or just look here, you'll recognize quite a few: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LucasArts_games
I spent many happy childhood hours playing X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle, Sam N' Max and Rebel Assault on a 486 I believe. But after Episode I came out I lost touch with their games for some reason and nothing new really appealed to me. Quite sad looking through this list of games - http://www.lucasarts.com/games/platform.html
I think they were actually working on 2 games. I don't know how far along in development they were, but obviously they weren't released.
X wing and Tie Fighter were legendary games. Same with the Rebel Assault series and Dark Forces. Disney's cleaning house and firing not only the Clone Wars animation staff but also now shutting down Lucasarts is pretty terrible. This is not what they did with Pixar which remained completely intact after the last merger with Disney.
