So, should i use the definition of a "cinematic game" that the game industry, game reviewers and game players use or one that a well-known *insert a multitude of derogatory words here* with a Youtube channel uses? Hmm, well, since I am a game designer, I should probably go with the industry definition.

Less vitriol: there is a different between what people consider a cinematic game from the genre standpoint (Quantic Dream games, Telltale games, Until Dawn, etc.) vs. a game presented in a "cinematic way" (Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Gears of War, Batman, etc.). Some people don't understand the difference. Jim would be one of them and so would Warren Spector (who got on his soapbox again a couple of days ago). Would you seriously put Uncharted and Heavy Rain in the same category?

Specter is correct. Pointless and worthless word.

The thing is, cinematic games are fine if there's a decent story. Heavy Rain's story is shit and the gameplay is barely better than in the widely derided Sega CD FMV games, so that leaves practically no reason to play it.

    Yes, the "overrated crap" category.

Well, we are going to disagree then.

I completely agree with this. I think that sometimes the lines can get blurred and people put one in the other category and vice-versa. Style versus genre.

Uncharted and Heavy Rain are completely different from each other. Also, I'm not exactly sure why people seem to have this massive rager for Jim Sterling.

I like Uncharted (haven't played all three, and I'll probably get 4 when I get a PS4 (aka when Shenmue III comes out for it)). I would say it's cinematic in the sense that it has a big, grand story and high production values. Heavy Rain is basically a playable movie. Omikron is more of a traditional adventure game than what QD has come out with since.

Now Metal Gear Solid on the other hand... that's a movie you play for bits at a time.

EHHHHHHHHHHHHHH not really MG3 was full of gameplay. MGS2 was HARD. Peace walker is all gameplay. MGS4 is cut scene heavy but there's a lot of gameplay to be had especially if you have no idea what you're doing.

I kinda agree with him on that one, but gosh does he sound like a self-righteous arrogant youtuber-with-an-epenis-and-a-confidence-issue-that-turned-into-arrogance-trying-to-make-up-for-it.

On-Topic: I think the premise is interesting, let's say if they can make anything else than an interactive version of Ghost in the Shell/Ex-Machina :p

If you have no idea what you're doing and/or want to 1000% it, you could get 100 hours out of Ground Zeroes. I forgot which one it was, but one (I want to say 2 or 3, but don't remember) had like 2 30 minute cutscenes with 10 minutes of gameplay in between.

I don't like him for that reason so it's very rare I watch his stuff or agree with him but this is one time he nailed it IMO

MGS IV was probably the worst when it came to cutscenes. The end one clocked in at about an hour and a half.

Want another cut scene heavy game? Xenosaga. While I love episode 1, those cutscenes are quite hefty. I remember one being around 35, 40 minutes and that was before I even hit the 10 hour mark IIRC.
