I dont own an Xbox 360, but I want to buy one. The question is, if I buy the 360 4gb slim one can I upgrade the hard drive with a normal laptop HD like the ps3 or I need to buy an especially HD for the 360 to be compatible?.

    Thanks in advance.

All Xbox 360s use proprietary HDDs. Apparently, if you open them up, they simply have a laptop HDD and a SATA connection inside, so it's probably possible to hack them and install your own HDD.

Yeap and you need to download HDDHackr , you can also order 360 slim HDD drive enclosures for around 7 bucks.

The slims you don't even need a hddhackr you just slide it in and press format. Worked fine for me with both a 320gb and a 80gb hdd. As lond as it's in fat32 format the console should find it and give the option to format it.

what brand of HD you use for the 320gb, people recommend a WD scorpio black or blue. Can I use another brand other than the WD?

Have in mind, that you may risk being banned from Xbox Live, for not using official hardware.

You can also use USB drives as storage...

No one has been banned for it. Too many people are selling them on ebay/websites and too many innocents would get banned.

I heard that you get banned if you get more than a 320gb HD, but to get a bigger HD work on the 360 you need to flash it, and that is what it makes you get ban.

    You heard wrong.

You need a legit hard drive ss.bin file and that file is what sets the size.

So if you got a 1TB hard drive, but flashed a 320gb ss.bin - the xbox will only see 320gb. You can only make a hard drive as large as the largest official drive that is out.

If you want to make it faster, Put a SSD instead of a HDD in there.

ALL XBOX360 hardware must contain SIGNED CERTIFICATES to work.

What HDDHackr do is modify a WESTERN DIGITAL HDD to match a exisiting SIGNED CERTIFICATE effectively cloning a existing MS HDD.

Nobody was ever banned for this because at this point Microsoft is unable to tell who is using the original and who is using the counterfeit HDD. All they can detect is more than one instance of a certain HDD unit online at any given time on XBL.

So they choose to "let it go".

The SIGNED CERTIFICATE thing apply to all XBOX360 official hardware that has data exchange functions with the console, like for example, wired or wireless controllers, wired USB microphones, wireless headsets, all music game hardware, the kinect sensor, USB WIFI network antenna, HDD and official memory units (for phats, non generic, non USB type).

No certificate, the device will be not detected and will be not accepted as an input or show as connected on the dashboard.

So no, you cannot take a PS3 HDD and use on a XBOX360 *as is* unless the said XBOX360 has a hacked kernel (JTAG or Reset Glitch Hack). Such hacks disable some of the protections allowing non signed HDDs to work.
Also, HDDHackr require a target HDD to be of a certain specific family of Western Digital products.

I think the list of drives you can use has expanded some recently. I have used my own HDDHackr drive on my Xbox for many years and have had no problems getting banned, so it is safe.

Someone figured out how to change the serial number of SEAGATE drives using the debug serial port.

Still you need a drive that matches model for the certificate you have.

What I did with my slim is just use an old phat xbox 360 HDD by opening the outer case of the HDD and placing it in there. The old phat HDD's tend to be much cheaper than the newer slim versions.

There's a "trick" with a file extracted from the console flash. I don't know the details of how it's done nor I care about the details, but one thing I tell you:

    It's pretty DETECTABLE.

So if you don't worry about being banned or if you only play offline, sure... Why not ?

Hes talking about removing the internal 4GB MU and soldering a usb cable to it. You can then connect a HDD to it and use the full contents apparently.

Seems there is no check on the internal MU for size or any security sectors like the proper hdd's
