I don't count myself as one of the alcohol & drug dependant citizens, but I do see a huge amount of drugs related issues on a daily basis in the UK. Once apon a time you'd have had to look very hard, lived in a socially deprived area or could expect to see evidence of it on a Saturday night.

On the whole more & more British people are being disenfranchised. Rather than the Labour government achieving it's aims of cutting poverty and reducing divisions in society, they have enhanced social exclusion.

It's the net result of under spending in key areas such as inner cities, affordable housing and training. Not so long ago you could leave school and become an apprentice. You'd learn a trade and be guaranteed work.

These days many of those who perhaps never had the opportunity to achieve academically are left struggling to get anywhere. Housing prices are incredibly high (often 5 or 6 times salary scales) and the opportunity to invest in your own property in certain areas has declined rapidly pushing locals out or into rented accomodation.

The cost of living in the UK has risen sharply in recent years so that expensive luxuries and simple necessities are being pushed further from the grasp of certain people. That tends to result in people turning to cheaper means of entertainment such as drink. One Supermarket is offering beer at 30p a pint this Christmas. That is less than milk!

Simply put there has been a slow decline in family life, moral standards, feelings of security (work, pension & housing). Overall a lot of people have filled these gaps in their lives with drinking large quantities of alcohol, heavy drug use and frankly not caring about themselves or their community (especially as many no longer feel part of any community).

Of course I am over simplifying things, but there is a great deal of truth in what I am saying and it doesn't take a £1million social report from the University of the Bloody Obvious to prove it.

It doesn't excuse crass and pitiful behaviour, but it certainly explains why so many Brits tend to be loud & obnoxious. Almost anywhere you find cheap booze, you'll find Brits drinking too much of it. Net result, we look shit abroad. It's still only really a minority of people, you can't tar everyone with the same brush, but it has become a bigger problem in recent years.

I find the whole thing deeply embarrassing especially when someone says "I've lived in the UK for 4 years....they are all alcoholics and junkies!" as frankly we aren't but I can see why you'd think that. Oh, the shame of it!

Well, even university lecturers "kid" about drinking , and they themselves will often tell stories of being drunk etc. Drinking, just as any drug, is not something to be "proud" of, and especially for people of academia.

Wait a moment. The main issue on Crete, at least in Hania, was drunken sailors causing problems in the towns local to the base. Who were these sailors? The US Navy. Almost every incident with foreigners was connected to that base. Sure, some brits got drunk and caused problems too, but so did the Dutch and German visitors. The majority were Sailors.

However, Hania was not really a big place for British visitors, they mostly went down south to Malia. We mostly got Scandanavians, the Dutch and Germans. In Kos, Ios and Mykonos I don't know, I've seen TV shows of people getting totally wasted and making a nuisance of themselves. It's not really a fair overal judgement though when those places specifically cater to that kind of wild holiday. The same with Ianappa and Ibiza. When you're offering a lot of cheap alcohol to teenagers and young twenty-somethings then it is inevitable you're going to face problems with drunken behaviour.

That's not to say Britain doesn't have an alcohol problem, it does. A major one. Drinking is part of the culture but it has gone way too far in recent years and binge drinking is now more popular, especially with women. In most cities a Friday or Saturday night is pretty disgusting to go out on. of course, this extents to vacations where Brits relax with alcohol and often make a bad name for themselves when abroad.

You live in Liverpool (or did last time I checked), which makes your bleak assessment of Britain unsurprising to me. In the North there is a bigger drinking problem than the South I think, at least from experience - especially in the bigger cities with big student populations, and the drinking issue tends to follow income. Some sweeping statements there, but I think it holds from a general viewpoint of all demographics. In terms of teenagers/early 20's, everywhere in the UK is bad for drunkeness.

When I compared the US with the UK it was in respect for the elderly, not drinking. I see the exact same disrespect here as anywhere else I have lived.
