Would it be possible for Nintendo to release a system update for wii to make it able to output a 720p image? I ask because a lot of screenshots ive seen for Metroid: Other M ar at 1280x720 resolution? I doubt Nintendo would do it, but is it possible?
Yes it is the 360 via software updates made it output in 1080P so I guess it's feasable for the Wii to as well. SOME games on PS2 output at 1080I too
Not real 1080i, the vertical resolution is lower and then stretched. with the Wii hardware you have to think about the fillrate and the 3MB video RAM (1MB of which is texture memory). The machine is not designed for that output, so something is going to suffer. In which case, what would be the point?
Yeah i figured it would be a strain on the system, i really dont see how a Wii could run a game at 720p and keep a steady framerate. The only reason i asked is because, like i said, i seen a few screens for yet to be released Wii games and there at 1280x720. Also, ive seen a Gamecube emulator running a couple of Wii games at that resolution and it was pretty damn sick. Wishful thinking i guess:icon_bigg
The Wii shots are usually on developer kits, can be done on just about any system. Many (most?) pause a scene, then take multiple pictures at a given resolution. Ive seen Xbox 360 games with the screenshot function take pictures that are 3840x2160
So are the Dev kits capable of running in Hd? Or does it run like normal and when the game is "paused" they can up the res for screenshot purposes?
Dev kits probably have more memory which helps with screenshots.. or perhaps the devkit can temporarily go higher resolution at the expense of fluidity and stability for those screengrabs. I'm sure retail Wii units can output at 720p via an update. It's a matter of feasibility in the long run. Regarding the PS2, only two games did 1080i --- Grand Turismo 4 and Tourist Trophy, both by Polyphony Digital.
For a few of the Xbox 360 games, it takes 9-ish 720p screenshots, then you paste them all together into one image. Some PS2 developers did similar.
You could use the HD loader to force games in 1080i on PS2. Looked crappy for most games, but it did a very good job of forcing 480p in 480i non-progressive games, for the most part.
