Stumbled across this while looking for some doom wads. Its a few years old now, but I thought it was weird enough to justify a topic XD The title pretty much says it all, its a 3-D Sonic fangame made with the Doom engine, of all things. Im currently downloading it, will comment back after ive played it a little bit.
I agree! i actually did made a thread on the subject but no one seemed to give any hindsight on it to see if it were possible or not. but yeah i think this would've stand out better than Super Mario 64 or close imho.
Dare I say a bit more interesting than 3D blast? Being built on the Doom engine would make loops impossible though which woulda turned quite a few people off if it was an official Sonic game back in the day. Pretty cool though.
This kind of thing makes me sad, all the things they could have done with Sonic on Saturn and look what we got :-(
That is one amazing doom mod. I was actually stunned to see it in action, because I suspected some half-assed fps with Sonic themed textures and enemies, not an actual third person view with a big change in gameplay mechanics to resemble an actual Sonic game.
Man, people have done pretty amazing things with the Doom engine. Not only have there been more than a few FPS total conversions, but totally different games like this. There's some talented MFers out there.
It really is amazing how much has been done with the Doom engine. I played a really good Diablo 2 clone made with the Doom engine a few years back (cant recall the name, sorry). Kudos to Carmack and Romero for making Doom open source, as it is what allows stuff like this to happen.
Yeah, hell one of the new Dreamcast games in the pipeline (Hypertension, which I heard started out as a Blood expansion) is using the Doom engine. It looks good and I'm actually excited for it.
Same here but doom on the saturn had a framerate that was choppy at best so I don't know if this game would have been possible, unless you like sonic without the speed.
The Japanese version of Doom is much better on the Saturn but it's still poor compared to Duke Nukem, quake and Exhumed/Power Slave. All of those are silky smooth. Exhumed even runs at what looks like 60fps.
Considering how many Sonic fans seem to think the dark and serious storylines were a good idea, I wouldn't say that...
Given that nobody could possibly mess up Sonic worse than SEGA did in 2006, yes. Awkward Sonic in love with a 17 year old human? Check Sonic dies? Check Terrible controls? Check Ugly as hell? Check AKon on the soundtrack? Check
