Just heard from a good friend of mine that Sony have shut and disbanded Studio Liverpool (formerly Psygnosis) as of today. They were reclassified as a Vita developer which pretty much signalled the nail in that coffin.

Goodbye Wipeout team etc and more UK industry jobs. Sony are a disaster this generation.

    RIP

Psygnosis was pretty cool: Lemmings, Destruction Derby, Discworld etc. Today it's more like goodbye Wipeout and all those other great games they've done in the last two generations, like....uhh....did I already say goodbye Wipeout?

I just had a phone call about the same thing myself. Very sad news for all the employees!

Oh man, that's a right shitter. I sure hope my mate who I've known for the last 17 years is OK. I sure hope he has a job set up to go to. Game programming was his life! One of the first things he did that really impressed me was a 3D polygon model of the destruction Derby car semi textured rotating around (minus wheels) and a stock Super Famicom / SNES. Oh, he also made a 3D model of inside his home and the games shop I worked in on his PC.

First Bizarre Creations was killed by Activision and now Psygnosis by Sony. There's only Traveller's Tales left who are from Liverpool.

They also developed all the games on Nick Arcade, the ones that were played before each round. That's a Bummer they were a great developer. Hopefully they'll regroup and start over as an Indy studio.

    Another reason to Hate Sony

Another great studio gone....sad story. By the way...Former employee from Rare said they wanted to do Killer Instinct 3 for XBOX, but Micro$oft said that their games need a broad audience. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea of Psygnosis to join $ony or Rare to join Micro$oft. Al those Kinect games are terrible...

As if they had a choice in the matter. I wouldn't call Studio Liverpool of the last decade or so a great studio either, all they've done is a bunch of crappy F1 games and about 3 Wipeouts. Also, putting dollar signs in company names is some really stupid 13-year-old Youtube commenter shit.

I've been a long, long fan of Sony. I've bought their failures. I've bought the Move. I've bought the PSP GO. And I did it with a smile on my face. No more. This was one of the, if not the only studio left that I felt had true talent that was owned by Sony. Always consistent, and has made some of the best games I've played in my life.

No more Sony for me. What's the point? If they want to keep slamming their face on the pavement, I'll look somewhere else for my entertainment.

Booting up Blast Radius and Rollcage II tonight in tribute.

This is absolutely devastating news for a huge WipEout fan such as myself! I'd heard they were working on a new sequel for the PlayStation 4 that would have introduced many new elements to the series, and that development was quite far along when Sony pulled the plug on the whole team along with its projects. Also, there was some kind of action game in the works using more advanced motion capture than LA Noire. Hopefully both of these projects will still see the light of day, though I'm also wishing that a company like Sumo Digital might pick up many of the now unemployed former Sony Liverpool staff and produce its own futuristic racing title. Better yet, how about if Psygnosis was to be resurrected? Whatever happens, it surely can't mean the end of this once lucrative franchise - the powers that be need to remember how their empire was almost entirely built on the original's success...

This is excessive. I may not care about most of the games themselves. Yet clearly there's *something* better a veteran team could've been assigned to.

Personally I'm more upset that chances are they'll never be another Puggsy game.

It would be awesome if they came back as Psygnosis again, Ive missed that owl!

They could work on old titles, im not a big mobile gamer but I could see something like what happened with Gremlin, releasing classics/updates on mobile devices

I'm not sure if they have made anything interesting since G Police anyway (cool game!) but it is a shame nontheless.

Also why do all these bankrupticies happen when I'm broke? All the best shit will be gone long before I can afford a train ticket!
