Their games are plenty interesting. And Sony's decision to not allow the company to do anything beyond Wipeout titles does not reflect on how much talent this dev team had. I would never wish a company to go away with the amount of sheer talent these guys had, just because an over controlling dick of a corporation like Sony decided to utilize them about as well as Microsoft utilizes Rare.
Heh, now you've got me wishing the devs would be hired by Nintendo to make a new F-ZERO and Wipeout-ish game. I would imagine Sony still owns the rights to that title, so it would probably have to be a game in the same spirit.
Sad news indeed. Hopefully they re-allocate those people to other devs like Evolution Studios. Hope this doesn't mean no more Wipeout games or some other franchises return. I'm so glad i bought Wipeout HD Fury on disc. RIP Psygnosis / Studio Liverpool =/
This is definitely sad, although equally a cursory glance at Wikipedia's page tells you all you need to know about Psygnosis in the 11 years as a Sony brand: In the 16 years as Psygnosis, they developed or published 154 titles in a wide variety of genres. In the 11 years after they became SCE Studio Liverpool, they developed just 13 titles, of which 6 were WipEout games, and 7 were Formula 1 racing games. Good luck to all the team in their future endeavours.
They should just get whatever Amusement Vision was renamed into to make a new F-Zero, because F-Zero GX is miles better than any Wipeout game. Assuming that studio still has most of its people intact (probably not).
Psygnosis was a huge part of the playstation 1's early library. So even after their 16 bit amiga/genesis/megadrive days they were putting out a variety of titles. Colony Wars, G Police and Wipeout come to mind immediately. These were great first party titles for sony that kept the old psygnosis spirit alive in the new polygon world of playstation. I think once wipeout became such a huge hit (and not much response to the colony wars sequel) they just kept making the sure fire wipeout games. Its a shame as they had amazing creative ideas. I wonder how many programmers had remained with the studio the whole time and how many had moved onto other things long ago? Hopefully the stories will start coming out.
