Sony patents technology that prevents used games from working on ps3

  1. I second that... crap games are something we've put up with for almost 30 years of video games, and I doubt that they will be going away anytime soon. It is just too easy to profit off of crappy games, just pump out a really quick and cheap title, market it right, and you've got yourself a money maker.

i dont know, but ive never played half-life 2 because they made you register and then repeatedly contact their server before you can play....i loved half-life, i spent hours, weeks, months making maps, models, bla blabla, but when valve decided to implement their big brother steam crap they lost me.

Ah... another Breath of Fire fan. Wasn't BOF5 pretty much worth having bought a crappy PS2?

Boy, am I hoping those games don't go Sony-Exclusive. All I buy lately (with a Teacher's salary in Mexico) is used. I just don't see myself affording a PS3 with the extra price from importing and then getting a new game for it.

Well BOF5 is heavily discounted everywhere at the moment, maybe fate will shine on us twice! All the money I earn is from jobs outside of term time. If I wasn't getting most of my fees paid by the university then I would be screwed in the games department.

And yes BOF is one of my favourite series of all time, BOF3 might just be my personal favourite. But I love what they did with 5.

If I can just touch on the "crappiness" of the PS2, this is a problem mainly centered around the US market methinks (maybe europe) All of my Jap ones are still in a fully functioning state, except the one I got on launch day which takes a couple of times to read dual layer DVDs. A freind of mine leaves his jap ps2 on all the time and he has no problems with it, even after a couple of weeks of being left one use. He does have a massive transformer, like me for the record. So I feel the build of my Jap ps2 is perfect. I'm going to buy a slimline one soon, so I can't vouch for those yet.
My personal vendetta is against the xbox. I have two thompson drive ones, they are both limited edition so I will not crack them open, but they don't read most of the full DVD games. I have never played ninja gaiden, simply because neither of my xboxes read them! Thankfully most of the Jap exclusive games are ok.

Before we get too much on Sony's case just remember that there is no evidence that they are ever going to do this. Let's also remember that Sony wasn't the only company to think of something like this. Sega did as well and if I remember correctly they actually used it.

  7. Noooo! Not our beloved Sega!!

Seriously though... I never remember hearing anything of this and I've been with Sega since Master System days. What system did they implement this on?

On the Sega AI, no doubt. I bet that's why there's so few of them around

maybe arcade interface?...... i remember reading the phantasy star online episode 1 had these kinds of features where it would only work with the dc that it was originally ran on

  11. Sega AI was a computer system put out in the 80's by Sega. Extremely rare. Check ASSEMbler's old page at http://assembler.emugaming.com for more info. I honestly don't know if the whole "plays only on the original system" thing goes for this or not, there really isn't much information to be had on the AI that I have ever been able to find. Someone might try asking ASSEMbler himself, he might know.

  12. As far as offline play goes, PSO seemed work on whatever system you threw it at, but I can't vouch for online play as I had already ditched dialup by that point and wasn't going to shell out for a broadband adapter. Not to mention that I really didn't like PSO... just a big let down from the true RPG's that the original ones were. I'd much rather have a great story than online play any day of the week, plus all the damn kids online just get on my nerves most of the time... hence why I usually play on xbox live without a headset.

This is true, but the game would run in offline mode on another DC. If your DC broke or something, you called them up to reset the registration number. Not hard to do. Technically, if you sold the copy to your friend, you could say you had his DC, and needed to change the serial number. Does prevent like 98% of reselling though.
