    APRIL FOOLS, DID YOU NOTICE?
    (between the massive DDOS and
    forum wars that is)

SONY VAIO TYPE X, THE COMPUTER+PS3

Sony announced a few days back a new type of the SONY TYPE X, which will
have PS3 functionality built in. Similar to the "PSX" the home media recorder,
it will be a multifunction unit with DVR capability, including a special suite of
video editing written for the RSX and CELL chips giving it near studio capability
for effects. Given the Vaio name, it also acts as a home PC.

Compared to a normal vaio the TYPE X is HUGE! But that is because is has a
2 TB DVR in there somewhere. It also has the huge blue ray drive and
a custom DVR add on for the rsx.

The unit featured the much more expensive full feature blue-ray drive
compared to ps3. Expect this to add at least $1000 to the price of the unit.
However, the DVR records in 1080P ! Those 2TB won't last long.

The heart of the recording and video editing is the modified RSX core. It allows
one to record ELEVEN different sources (compared to the older models that did
only! seven) simultaneously, but not at 1080P. Max resolution for the eleven
    way recording is 720 :-(

An interesting thing is the remote, which features "intuitive control". You point
the controller at the menu for what shows you want to record. Why sony hasn't
adapted this controller to mimic nintendo is unknown. Probably patents.

The unit also records videos for PSP of all things.

Now for the bad news, the expected price tag? 300,000 yen, or about
    $3000 USD.

Pre-orders won't start on the street until may, and can be reserved currently only at sony online stores at the moment.

You can pre-order but you need to be a member of "vaio owners pass"

I have already had my Japanese source pre-order for me with a small discount for pre-ordering it!

(I'll be the first in Italy, he hee!)

It's like PSX the PS2+DVR, except now they chucked a ps3 and a vaio pc in it too.

I have no idea why you'd want to record 11 programs at once.

So is the PC going to run off the Cell, meaning (at best) some form of linux with even less software than an x86 build, or are they gonna shove a P4 in and have it run windows?

Seems doomed to obscurity from the get go to me...

Well, I shouldn't tell you, since I have a very special relation with that source. I will post some pics as soon as I receive it if someone is interested.

I wonder if it heats up much...anyway the software in bundle is interesting ;)

Hmmm 3000 dollars ? well if I should order it, then the biggest bill, would be. The posting bill.

But other than that, then it isn´t that expensive, but still it is in the expensive spectrum.

Beh, aspetta almeno che mi arrivi! Per ora ho solo una email data dal mio contatto con le specifiche ecc. Ma credo che quelle siano anche online.

(transl: well, I should receive it first! At the moment I've just an email with tech specs, software bundled and so on. I think that these are already online somewere.)

Don't see why. It's plausible seeing as Sony have already produced the PSX. Type X = PSX with PS3 instead of PS2. I played with PSX and remain pretty impressed.
