Rather than trawl thorugh the www Can someone tell me what they exactly they did and are they worth getting hold of and do they work with any console?
Hmmm... pretty sure: I believe officially they could function as an extremely large memory card and a few games would copy files to the HDD to cut loading times. Accompanied with the HDLoader you would have the ability to copy entire PS2 games onto the HDD without future need of the original (most commonly for pirating). The PStwo does not have HDD support. ~Krelian
if you're talking about the us version, it's bassicly only for ffxi (officially), but i know there was much more to do with it in japan, don't remember what though...
weren't thoes for the original ps2 in japan since it did not have a hdd bay in the back of the system? edit- I think they also come with the linux kit ps2 units as well.
I'm using it with hdadvance to play imports without chip or cog-swap. Even I use it to play PAL games, because loading times usually are shorter.
External HDD -> Japan Only These were for the first PS2's released in Japan, that instead of a Internal Expansion Bay, had a PCMCIA Card port. Internal HDD -> US and Japan Normal computer HD made by Maxtor / Seagate, that had a different firmware. Like i posted many times, you can use any compatible HD (check here: http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/ ) if you just want to use HD Loader. If you want to use any HD like the official one (making backups of PS1 and PS2 saves, installing game caches on games like RE: Outbreak, ....) you'll need a modchip that has the AUTO ATAD Patching feature. If you have a PS2TWO, you can use USBExtreme. You get a normal HD, and connect it through an USB acessory. The lowdowns of the USBExtreme? Well, everytime you decide to install / delete a game, you have to disconnect if from the PS2 and connect it on the computer to do it. There's no way of doing it using the PS2. With HDLoader, on the normal PS2, you can install/delete games on the ps2 itself. You can even install games through the network adaptor, connecting it to a PC. There's some people doing a modification for the PS2TWO's to use HDs like the normal PS2, called HDconnect. Check here: http://www.teamxtender.com/
I really need one of the HDDs lol. Ive got an older NTSC-J Model, with the slot needed for it lol. Havent been able to find one. Ill take pictures of it if ya want.
I had one person offer a used one to me for 150, but then shipping from japan. Most I see are right around the 200USD mark complete. Still waiting to see if i can find a deal on one.
Nope, wouldn't work with a TEST machine because the first TESTs were based on the 3000x series hardware. It would work with a Debug based on the 1x000 series hardware though. -hl718
If i had money, i would pay 200 or so for one. But seeing as my stuff doesnt like to sell, im in no position to buy one heh.
