i can clone the PS2 HDD easily by cloning softwares but not yet with the PSX. i think the PSX HDD might have something to lock the HDD into the motherboard (similar to those Xbox HDDs. you need to unlock the HDD first and then do the rest) but i dont quite sure about that.

PS2 HDDs are not locked at all... You can do whatever you want with the data in them as long you don't modify it. Also the said data will only work on the same drive it was copied from. That's what the PS2 specific commands and security are for. And that's why making ghost images of them to other drives won't work at all.

On the XBOX we had generic drives being used with ATA password security... that's a bit different... The contents were not tied to the actual drive.

thank you for your explanation but i think you misunderstand my point

all i said is why i can do everything with a PS2 HDD but i cant do with a PSX HDD. i cloned my PS2 HDD to a larger HDD and it work just fine. However, the PSX HDD is another story.

You don't seem have experience with *OFFICIAL* PS2 software for HDD, do you ? Not only such software have multiple layers of copy protection (hardware checking and DNAS), it also have HDD and Console serial number binding mechanisms, which means they will cease to work for you just moving the hard drive from one console to another. To move such a hard disk from one console to another a full HDD format and full reinstall of the software (proves that you own the original discs) is required.

HD Loader is not really anything official by any means and since it's just a piracy tool, the data it makes on the hard disk has no kind of copy protection. It just happens to be made in a way it is compatible and can sit on a hard disk that contains official software installed.

The PSX is a official product from Sony so I expect it's hard drive to contain the same kind of protection an official PS2 hard disk has.

Ah before you mention game discs that install data on the hard disk, those don't contain protections, because they rely on the disc protection as the disc is still required to start the game. Only retail/original games that autostart from the HDD (PSBBN titles, Final Fantasy XI, Nobunaga Online) will have DNAS/HDD protection.

thank you for a very detail explanation.

yes. i admit that i don't have experience with the OFFICIAL PS2 HDD. i do have it (including in the FFXI bundle pack) but i've never used it. you are right, my buddy devbere on psxforum said something similar to you when he took a look at my PSX. he said that the HDD is locked to the hardware and i need the installation software disc like the one comming with the OFFICIAL PS2 HDD.

well, it seems to me that there is no way to replace the current PSX HDD. As a result, the system will gone when the HDD fails.

oh, and i just add one more detail for any one out there wonder if they can install PS2 game on PSX HDD. it does allow you to do that. my FFX international installs about 2GB on the PSX HDD but it still requires the disc in order to play the game.

Are you sure XP didn't ask you to format the hdd?
And you inadvertantly have pressed "yes" (or in your case "ja")?
Cause it looks like a newly formatted hdd in the picture...

I doubt Sony uses NTFS for the hdd in the DESR or in any other consumer products, they already had the PFS file system on the PS2 hdd, I think the hdd might have a problem, you should get another...

hm.. I'm trying to put a other psx desr 5100 hdd image on my hdd...(with the help of an assembler user) somewhere I have a spare samsung 160 GB HDD. but first I will try that thing with the image copy ^^

    EDIT:

I'm now running the PSX HDD trough some tests... maybe there are some physical problems with the HDD.. I don't know. crashed sectors or what ever.

after that, I will run a file recovery tool, which doesn't care about the file system. maybe some jerk just deleted all the data or formated the disk o0

well I let ya guys know about the results!

souns like whoever sold you the unit kept the DESR HDD to himself and stuffed an xbox hdd for you. possibly not knowing it doesn't work or just from ...*ehm* other reasons,

I don't think so, because my HDD is the same type as the HDD which Parris has/had in his PSX DESR:

I bought it from a German collector as far as I can remember (don't know from which collector)... two or three years ago, for 250 euros incl. shipping ^^'
