My first one broke, and I never bought another one. BTW, I do take good care of my stuff. I am a collector after all. I may buy another one as there are still a few games I want to play, R&C series, J&D series, KillZone, and some tactical RPGs.

Dunno, I take care of mine and I never had any problems with any of the four I use (psone debug, ps2 test, Jpn model and usa.)

My PS2 works great, and takes quite a beating. Stepped on, kicked (hard), droped from 5ft. It's all good.

I guess my PS2 works good since it is protected by the winged Evangelion unit 05-13. :D

90 million, Sony did a 'good work' with the crap material of the machine.

I have now two PS2, one PAL and one NTSC U/C, and I had a SCPH-30004 that died.

A lot of people have bought a second PS2 because the first one have died, and a bunch of geeks buy a second to play imports without a modchip.

Same here, no problem at all with my PS2s, I have a PAL V3 and a US V4 and both work fine, though the V3 can get a little noisy.

I'm on my 2nd, but only because I put the 1st in the glovebox of the car and then bought a pre modified Magic 3 unit for the house.

The magic 3 unit is having some issues though, not playing everything. Probably just needs a lens cleaning. Good thing about broken PS2s is there are so many parts flying around, very easy to fix the things if something goes awry.

I had to replace my PS1 three times, then after I had it modded, it never broke down again.

My PS2 I bought brand new, pre-chipped with the Messiah chip, and so far it has never gone wrong. Well, I did need to open it up and clean the lense twice, but otherwise its fine.

Im wondering if there is a correlation between using a chipped system, and it lasting longer?

Then again, I take extra care of mine now. After every time I play it, I unplug everything and wrap it in plastic bags to keep dust out.

All of my other sony products have broken down soon after purchase.

None of my Sony TVs have lasted more than 18 months before something breaks (normally its the scart socket that goes first).
My video machine lasted maybe a year and a half.
My Sony CD burner lasted 3 days before breaking. So I had it replaced with a cheaper, generic no-name brand which is still working 5 years later.
And my Sony cassete player also broke down about 1 year after purchase.
I learned my lesson though, and took 3 years insurance on a portable Sony CD player. Which I have now replaced 3 times free of charge! :D

    <sigh>
I miss the cartridge days. No moving parts meant that stuff nearly never broke down.

Indeed. Any CD-based thing gives me the creeps when I think about durability.

On the whole yes, but which Famicom model was it (FDS system?) that has the belt problem? Chances of finding one of those working that hasn't been replaced these days are apparently quite slim.

I have two PS2's and both had to be shipped backed. Now their boxed up and ready to be shipped again. Granted, I use my systems on an almost daily basis but this is bullshit.

My first ps2 is going strong to this day, some 3 years after purchase.

And this is after it took an unscheduled flight from a 1st floor window to the tarmac below. It was round at a friends, we went off for some food, get back to find a thief passing my mates stuff out his window to his accomplice below..and we turn up just as the ps2 was going out the window. We start shouting, the chap outside scarpers leaving my ps2 to smack to the ground. We got the chap inside the house though and proceeded to vent our anger. Indeed the visions I had of my new ps2 in bits roused a new level of fury in me that I previously didn't know I had and didn't this would be burglar know it.

My delight at recovering my ps2 and seeing not 1001 pieces, but just 1 that still worked perfectly(albeit with a little dent in one corner) was one of the best feelings.

    Precisely.

The FDS system used disks, and required a drive belt. Which equates to moving parts. And yeah, they broke down very easily. Meaning right now mine doesn't work anymore. :smt022

The actual Famicom cartidge systems were very sturdy though. Even stronger than the NES, whose crappy pin connections were bent out of shape too easily.

Btw, what does it mean when your PS2 drive tray starts making, "juddery scraping noises" when you open it? Is it an imminent sign of doom?

My PSX still works, but it does a little less every day. It's 8 years old, Modded like 6 and a half years ago. Other than an annoying interference problem on the Super Nes, all my consoles still work - even if my room is still very dust-prone.

All, but the PS2 which is under repair. Even that one, it's almost four years old. And modded.
    I'm just lucky, I guess.

    Famicoms are really resilient.
Older style famiclones were BUILT FOR WAR. They could withstand serious stuff.
I find the dreamcast very delicate - maybe more than the PSX - but it's still very high quality.

The Dreamcast is indeed delicate...it's the first console ever to fail on me and each one I've owned has had problems in some way, shape or form.

I have to disagree with it being "high quality"...in fact, the GD-ROM drive is the loudest most annoying optical drive I've ever owned. It literally sounds like the system is sawing itself in half during games with excessive loading.

Why the hell are you still buying Sony stuff?

I've never had a prob with Sony stuff breaking, but it's generally of very low quality - so I never use them. Don't think I own anything with the Sony brand on it now... No, I don't.
