After almost 12 years (december 94) SCE decided to cease production on the original playstation. More than 11 years and two more consoles later, the electronics giant has pulled the plug on its first console, ceasing all production of PS units. Last September, Sony announced that the original PlayStation and its PSOne redesign had surpassed the 100 million units sold milestone. Shit I feel old, more than 11 years since that thing came out? I dont know you guys, but I still feel like it was yesterday.
Yep, i remember the first time i saw it running Ridge Racer, Gunners Heaven and Tekken. Seeing demos of Philosoma, Air Combat, Jumping Flash,... I remember exactly that i was like  after the Philosoma intro CG. Not to mention the chance to play Ridge Racer and Tekken at home. (although i only got my PS1 on June 1995)
Same here... I remember playing Ridge Racer 2 and Tekken in the arcades all Summer in the Golden Sands arcade, Hunstanton, then seeing the rolling demos of those games actually running on something I could own in only a few months time. It was too much. September seemed so far away. The game that really captured my imagination was Wipeout, though. The dance music, the speed of the game, the (for the time) special effects. I think the most memorable moment for me was first testing the Wipeout 2097 demo - it just oozed the coolness that was a trademark for the Playstation in the UK at that time. There were many others, but for me starting up the demo and the intensity of what was being shown on screen blew me away. Despite all their criticism, Sony has brought gaming out to the masses in Europe and it made it socially acceptable to be a gamer. It made gaming cool for the first time.
I got the US version SCPH-1001. I can't remember exactly if it was on 1995 or 1996, but it was in June for sure. Got it as a birthday present for myself :icon_bigg Also forgot to mention Wipeout and Warhawk on that games list. Those game are so amazing and i can't wait for their PS3 sequels. Wipeout XL / 2097 is the most amazing futurist racer to date (in my humble opinion). Everything is perfect on it. Wipeout 3 is also great, but XL is the perfection. Wipeout XL > Wipeout 3 > Wipeout Oh, and you can't deny how fun is to destroy cars in Destruction Derby (1, 2 and RAW)
Then it has to be 96, cuz as far as I know at that time the only 32bits systems were 32X and Saturn. Yeah wipeout kiked ass at the time, but once you play FzeroGX everything else moves slowly
The only thing that caught my attention after Ridge Racer was Raiden Project. I played that one to pieces on my bro's new Playstation. Yes, it does feel like just a short time ago.
Out of all the times playing PS1, i remember playing Soul Edge on a nice spring day on my Easter Break, it was perfect gaming conditions heh.
Soul Edge aged quite well. The game still looks amazing ( using PS2 smooth texture makes it even better).
i quite agree, tought i slightly prefer wip3out at wipeout 2097.... by the way wip3out is in playstation's high resolution and running smooth and fast as hell.... i gues it is one of the most impressive games ever; a game that really uses the machine power (by the way i've heard that in WIP3OUT there's a Gameshark code that allows you to play in 4 people linking 2 PSX... it's true?)
I know you can link up in WipeOut3 Special Edition (which is my favourite in the series). No Idea about the original one. My best PSX memory? Being drunk and depressed, 17 years old, alone and spending all night playing Final Fantasy 7... pondering my own immortality/mortality. You could say many of those games saved my life. Boy, High School rocked!
First PSX game for me was Jumping Flash 2, didn't have a memory card so I just left the machine on for a week while I bet the thing (Twice for the 2 modes), better days.
hmmm for the record. I am pretty sure my JP PSX arrived at my place just before XMas 1994, just since most people cite the laucnh date as 1995/96. And yes, it was horribly expensive to import it ah yea, just looked it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation , launched in Japan 3rd Dec 1994. Remember fondly the launch titles i had. Toh Shin Den and Ridge Racer were awesome at the time, and Raiden Project of course was pretty impressive. Also had the worst launch title, Kileak the Blood - it was a shambles. tubo tubo
Yes, I also have a almost mint Toshinden and Ridge Racer JAP launch games, but I lost the disc of Ridge Racer somewhere. Ridge Racer says "(c) 1994 NAMCOT".
Christmas after US Playstaton launch was spent playing NFL Gameday constantly at my friend's house....AND we played Toshinden off the demo disk nonstop.
