Howdy all, As tends to happen sometimes on the old yeebay I just bid stupidly low on something and won. In this case an 32x (NTSC US) with matching Genny mark 2 are on the way with no games of any sort. As ive never really looked into the 32x before im hoping for advice from any board members who already have one as to whats worth looking at for the system? And im wondering if as im in PAL land if its really worth bothering to mod the system to support any PAL releases?
I'd have thought an Everdrive would be your first port of call for this thing to be honest. I've been toying with the idea of getting a mark 1 PAL Mega Drive with Mega CD (there's a bundle for sale near me) and plonking a 32x + Everdrive on top. I believe the PAL/NTSC 50/60hz mod is easy enough to do as the solder points on that console are quite accessible. The only thing that put me off is the fact the damn thing would need 3 plug sockets, and I'd have to find a SCART cable somewhere. To answer your question about PAL support I'd say stick to US/JP games as PAL games run with black bars and about 25 - 30% slower than NTSC I believe.
Everdrive is good. But if you look for regular cartridges, I personally love to play Knuckles Chaotix and virtua racing. Modding it is only really worth it if you want to play Darxide or use it as a pass-through device for RGB SCART on both NTSC and PAL games on a model 1. Or if you like moding it, as it is a really simple mod to do.
Hasn't Darxide been patched to run on NTSC, via Everdrive. There's also been several different guys who have sold repros of it. I use my 32X with the Everdrive MD as well, I have a few actual games. The most prominent (cheaper) ones like Virtua Racing, NBA Jam, Star Wars, Afterburner, etc. Frankly the best games on 32X are also pretty easy to obtain cheaply. Most of the expensive, rare, and prototype games you can play the ROM via Everdrive. But they are usually pretty bad.
I've heard the 32X Spiderman game is rather rare and sucks. I've heard Space Harrier and Afterburner are supposed to be worth a try. I'd suggest an EverDrive flash cart to just try everything out. Blackthorne is interesting. It was also on SNES but censored unlike the 32X version.
Agreed Star Wars and Virtua Racing are worth a look at and you should be able to find them at reasonable price boxed or unboxed. It's a quirky little sytem, I have PAL one + MD2 and MCD2 and it's a beast to look at. Welcome to the Club
I live in PAL land as well and am awaiting a US NTSC Sega genesis 2, Sega CD 2 and 32X all in NTSC im planning on patching them as for the 32X if your mega drive is patched then patching the 32x is really simple for auto switching with the genesis just a few wires soldered in place After that a Mega Everdrive will be my route

Cheers all nice to know theres a still some love out there for the little mushroom add on that couldnt. I am still learning to solder properly so i dont think ill be opening the 32x up straight away so itll probably just live on the mark 2 Genesis until im a bit more up to scratch. Im normally the kind of guy who goes for the legit carts but considering the library for the 32x is so small I might get one when ive got a bit of spare cash (which I would have if i hadnt gone and bought a 32x). I always wanted a 32x for starwars, vr racing and virtua fighter back in the day so i think if nothing elses ill pick up copies of each of them.
JagDoom32x, Doom for the 32x patched to use the maps from the Jaguar version. Somewhere my NTSC patched copy is floating around.
Mortal Kombat 2 on 32x was the closest port to the Arcade game some people say. Its definately better than the genny and snes versions though (which was rare as most devs did rush ports on their mega cd and 32x ports).
I've heard that the Saturn version is better, which makes sense to me. I saw the 32X version of it at a store recently, and I seriously considered buying it, but I didn't. I kinda regret it now.
I'll soon be re purchasing a 32x- as above members have said to go with a Mega Everdrive cartridge. I had Knuckles chaotix game before and loved it - although it is a little strange if I remember correctly. I also had the Star Wars game which was ok.
Not even close. Just use Mame and emulate the arcade version Give Doom a go, but mute the music and play something instead, it sounds like farting noises Darxide is also awesome, Corpse Killer is worth a bash if you've got a Sega CD [its one of the few Sega CD-32x games] and is practically a rite of passage. Tempo is a cult classic and if you can get it for the right price well worth a play through. Avoid the "virtua" games because they all look ass, but Metal Head is really quite astounding.
